A trade dispute between a garment exporting factory and a freight forwarder was resolved with the mediation of BGMEA. Representatives of both companies -- Banga Fashion Limited, and Expo Freight Limited signed the agreement in the presence of BGMEA President Dr. Rubana Huq. The factory had been suffering for the last four years and in a landmark mediation by BGMEA - they will get compensated by the freight forwarder. The negotiation is significant as it has set a precedent for other similar cases where freight forwarding companies will be cautious about taking any actions that go against business terms and conditions. BGMEA Senior Vice President Faisal Samad, ABM Shamsuddin, former vice-president of BGMEA and Chairman of Hannan Group, and Chairperson of BGMEA Standing Committee on Branding Mijanur Rahman were also present on the occasion.

LDC graduation: Our shirts will be 25% costlier, we have 5 years to act In 2026, when Bangladesh will no longer be a least developed country (LDC), a shirt made in a Dhaka factory would be 20-25% pricier in Montreal or Sidney than the one shipped from Vietnam. Average tariffs on Bangladesh-made apparels will go up by 10-15% when Vietnam, a key competitor, will enjoy duty-free access to markets of Canada, Australia, China, Japan and the European Union. Bilateral and regional free trade agreements and engagement in trade blocks will give Vietnam a competitive edge. To offset the impacts of graduation from the LDC and stay competitive, Bangladesh needs to make efficient use of the next five years carrying out tough negotiations bilaterally, or as a group, says Professor Mustafizur Rahman, distinguished fellow of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), analysing costs and benefits of graduating from the LDC to a developing country.

Opinion: Apparel diplomacy for the post-LDC era: Faruque Hassan, Managing Director of Giant Group It would not be an exaggeration to say that Bangladesh currently possesses some of its finest and talented apparel diplomats led by the Senior Foreign Secretary who himself has proved his mettle in the field. What we need is close collaboration between the industry and the government to secure Bangladesh's interests in the changing apparel landscape. It's worth mentioning here that the export threshold was extended from 4 percent to 6.5 percent when Pakistan was awarded with the GSP Plus. So, I believe with the industry insights, expertise of our civil servants, and the vision of the government, Bangladesh is well-placed to pursue the required apparel diplomacy for securing the extension of the threshold to around 12-13 percent.

Job growth didn’t stumble too much: Salman F Rahman, Adviser to Prime Minister on Private Sector Industry and Investment, spoke to The Business Standard The country's job growth did not get impeded too much due to the pandemic. There was a minor setback, but the job sector has already ridden it out. The government is extensively working to attract domestic and foreign investments. Numerous development works are especially ongoing at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar in Mirsarai, Japan Economic Zone in Araihazar and Matarbari. These economic zones are getting both local and foreign investments even amid the pandemic. We talk about employment generation all the time. But I do not think the country has a high unemployment rate.

OPINION: New challenges and opportunities for export industries of Bangladesh The current duty free access to export markets for several commodities of the country will cease to exist once we leave the LDC group and step into the developing country category. Bangladesh got five years time to prepare itself for the challenges for stepping in to the developing nations group. Policy planners, business groups and executing agencies should work out appropriate strategies to meet the upcoming challenges for the new realities and reform the deficiencies in scores of areas, including infrastructure and service delivery by the public sector. A comprehensive plan and strategy need to be worked out for sustainable human resource development for the new realities.
