তৈরি পোশাকের তীব্র কার্গো জটে নাকাল ঢাকা বিমান বন্দর বিজিএমইএ সহসভাপতি শহীদুল্লাহ আজিম বলেন, 'মহামারির কারণে দোকান প্রায় ফাঁকা বলে আমাদের অনেক ক্রেতা এয়ার ফ্রেইটে পণ্য পাঠাতে বলছে।' অন্যদিকে গন্তব্যের ভিত্তিতে কার্গো শিপিং চার্জ ৪০০ শতাংশ পর্যন্ত বাড়িয়ে দেওয়া হয়েছে বলেও জানান তিনি। শহীদুল্লাহ আজিম আরও জানান, পোশাক প্রস্তুতকারকদের হাতে আরও বিপুলসংখ্যক কার্যাদেশ রয়েছে। এর ফলে এই চাপ আরও বাড়তে পারে। তিনি বলেন, 'পোশাক পণ্য ও কাঁচামালের আমদানি-রপ্তানি পর্যায়ের কাজের গতি আরও বাড়ানোর জন্য বিজিএমইএ ইতিমধ্যে বেসামরিক বিমান চলাচল কর্তৃপক্ষ এবং বিমানবন্দর কর্তৃপক্ষের সঙ্গে কথা বলেছে।'

Exports to Bhutan go up as trade agreement kicks in Bangladesh's exports to Bhutan could rise on the back of the bilateral trade pact signed last year after shipment to the South Asian nation has already shown a significant upward trend. Bangladesh struck its maiden preferential trade agreement (PTA) with Bhutan on December 6 last year. The beneficiary Bangladeshi products are garments, processed agricultural goods and electronics, while that of Bhutan are fruits and stone. Bangladesh exported nearly $0.32 million worth of garment items to Bhutan in the last fiscal year. "Since the market is not that big, it is not a major target destination for apparel exporters," said Shahidullah Azim, vice-president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association.

Ctg port sees better turnaround times In a rare development, Chattogram port has been able to allow container ships to berth faster upon arrival over the past 40 days, enabling brisk delivery of imports. Vessels usually have to wait five to six days at the outer anchorage to get the scope to dock. This period of stay had gone up to as much as seven to eight days since the third week of July for an acute container congestion at the port amid the Eid-ul-Azha holidays and countrywide lockdown. But for the past 40 days till yesterday, a major portion of vessels had to wait only one or two days to get berth.

Excess work orders give RMG makers price edge With a strong sign of recovery in exports, Bangladeshi apparel makers are now flooded with work orders, which has created opportunities for them to negotiate better prices. “Till August, work orders surpassed the pre-Covid-19 level and exceeded manufacturers’ capacities. This is because of a rise in demand for goods in the US and European markets,” BGMEA Vice-President Shahidullah Azim told The Business Post. After economies reopened, brands and buyers are placing more orders to cater to the rising demand, he said. In addition, work orders shifted from India and Vietnam as Covid-19 hit production there in the last couple of months while that in Bangladesh continued in full swing, he said.

ED: Reclaiming our spot It is very encouraging to see that Bangladesh has regained its position as the second largest apparel exporter by earning $1.94 billion more than Vietnam in the first seven months of this calendar year, exporting apparel products worth $18.80bn during the period. This is even more impressive because Bangladesh’s economy has continued to be hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, and credit must be given to everyone involved in the country’s RMG industry, especially the hard-working labour force who continue to be the principal reason for RMG’s sustained progress in earnings despite the many setbacks.
