Garment export order falls 20pc as inflation, war bite Work orders to the garment sector in Bangladesh fell by more than 20 per cent for the September and November season as consumers in the western world are tightening their belts owing to blistering inflation and deepening uncertainty caused by the Russia-Ukraine war. In another unpromising sign for the country's biggest foreign currency earner, the risks for the US and the European Union, the two largest export destinations for Bangladesh, falling into recession are growing. "International clothing retailers and brands have cut the work orders by 20 per cent for the September to November season compared to the March to June season," said Faruque Hassan, president of BGMEA.

Apparel exports dwindle to unconventional markets Bangladesh is experiencing a downward trend in apparel shipments owing to the war between Russia and Ukraine. According to BGMEA, Bangladesh lost 7.5 percent of its export revenue in Japan, 2.39 percent in Australia, 63 percent in Russia and 37.28 percent in China year on year.“We are losing export earnings across the globe. Some of the potential countries’ import data show a negative curve. Besides, we are losing work orders as well due to the prolonged war which has created severe inflation in most parts of the world,” Shahidullah Azim, vice president of BGMEA told the Business Insider Bangladesh. He, however, said Bangladesh is not facing many difficulties to realise revenue transactions from the Russian market.

Factories in Savar, Manikganj suffer for low gas pressure Low pressure of gas has been interrupting production at the garment factories in Savar, Ashulia and Manikganj areas for the last few days, causing a loss for the factory owners. After a 22.8% hike in gas price, such interruption has been causing severe damage to the country's top foreign currency earning sector, said the industry insiders. Sources at the Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited said the gas distribution has fallen as LNG import to the country has dropped.

The donation comes as a part of Palmal Group’s social responsibility towards the people who are in need of support.behalf of Managing Director of Palmal Group Nafis Sikder, Group’s Director Md. Emdad Hossain handed over a check of 25 lacs taka to BGMEA President Faruque Hassan at his office.

C&F agents postpone their 2-day strike C&F agents at all customs stations across the country have postponed their two-day strike for 15 days after negotiations with the National Board of Revenue (NBR). On 25 June, the Federation of Bangladesh Customs Clearing and Forwarding Agents Association called a full-day strike for 28 and 29 June, including at Chittagong Custom House, to realise various demands, including the amendment of Licensing Rules-2020 by the NBR.

'Women in RMG sector get lower wages than men': ILO report shows gender pay gap 22pc here Female workers, despite their larger representation in local garment factories, are paid lower than their male counterparts, according to a latest report of the International Labour Organisation (ILO). The gender pay gap (difference between male and female hourly earnings as a percentage of male earnings) was as high as 41 per cent for Pakistan and 22 per cent for Bangladesh, it showed.

ছোট উদ্যোক্তারাই অর্থনীতির প্রাণ সরকারি সংস্থা বাংলাদেশ পরিসংখ্যা ব্যুরো (বিবিএস) সম্প্রতি ‘উৎপাদন শিল্প জরিপ’–এর চূড়ান্ত প্রতিবেদন প্রকাশ করেছে। এর আগে ২০১৯ সালে প্রাথমিক প্রতিবেদন প্রকাশ করা হয়েছিল। চূড়ান্ত প্রতিবেদনে দেখা গেছে, গত এক দশকে দেশে ছোট কারখানার সংখ্যা বেড়েছে ৭ হাজার ৬৪০টি। ফলে সারা দেশে বর্তমানে ছোট কারখানা দাঁড়িয়েছে ২৩ হাজার ৩০৬টি। দেশব্যাপী ছড়িয়ে ছিটিয়ে–ছিটিয়ে গড়ে ওঠা এসব কারখানায় পোশাক, পাট ও পাটজাত পণ্য, হালকা প্রকৌশল পণ্য, খাদ্য প্রক্রিয়াজাতকরণ পণ্য, বেকারি পণ্য উৎপাদিত হয়। এ ছাড়া রাইস মিল তথা চালকলসহ নানা ধরনের ছোট কারখানাও রয়েছে অনেক।
