Apparel exporters for further enhancing shipment to German market As the United Kingdom market is reopening slowly after relaxation of lockdown imposed there to mitigate Covid-19 attack, Bangladesh is emphasising on its shipment to Germany for apparel products. The export to Germany has decreased from $1,014.98million in July-August of FY 2020-21 to $903million in FY ‘21-22 (year on year) which shows a 10.25 percent de-growth, according to BGMEA. “Germany is a very potential and big market where demand for cotton based garments is higher than other markets. Worry over fast depreciation of taka vs dollar Business leaders have raised serious concerns over speedy depreciation of Bangladesh taka (BDT) against the American dollar as it is pushing the import costs up. The BDT-dollar exchange rate in banks was recorded between Tk 86.20 and Tk 89.50 in Chattogram, according to the Chattogram Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI). But the inter-bank exchange rate as per the Bangladesh Bank (BB) was quoted Tk 85.6 last week. The CCCI, one of the leading trade promoters in Bangladesh, has urged the central bank to intervene in the soaring rate of dollar.

OP-ED: Minimum wage and employment Nobel laureate David Card, in collaboration with Alan Krueger, conducted a study in the early 1990s to examine the impact of an increase in minimum wages from $4.25 to $5.05 per hour on employment in 410 fast-food industries in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The findings of this seminal work suggest, contrary to the conventional economic theory, that the increase in minimum wage had not led to significant job losses in the industry. Inspired by this work, and literature on western countries, I conducted similar research to examine this issue in the context of Bangladesh, The main results are in line with Card and Kruger’s findings that higher minimum wages result in higher formal employment, particularly female employment, in the RMG industry of Bangladesh.
