BGMEA partners with Brac to prevent gender-based violence, harassment at factories BGMEA signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Brac Social Compliance Programme Saturday to prevent garment workers from gender-based violence and workplace harassment. Faruque Hassan, president of BGMEA, and AFM Shahidur Rahman, director of programme development for resource mobilisation and learning at Brac, signed the agreement. Miran Ali, vice-president of BGMEA; SK Jenefa Jabbar, director of social compliance and safeguarding, Karishma Mahfuz, deputy manager of social compliance and safeguarding, Md Nur Jaman, senior trainer of social compliance, and Afsana Sultana, senior developer of social compliance at Brac, were also present.

ওমিক্রন রোধে পোশাক কারখানায় ১৭ নির্দেশনা কর্মক্ষেত্রে সার্বক্ষণিকভাবে শ্রমিক-কর্মচারীদের মাস্ক পরা বাধ্যতামূলক করতে সদস্য কারখানাগুলোর প্রতি এ নির্দেশনা দিয়েছে বিজিএমইএ। এ ছাড়া সব ধরনের সামাজিক, রাজনৈতিক, ধর্মীয় ও অন্যান্য লোকসমাগম এড়িয়ে চলতে শ্রমিকদের পরামর্শ দেওয়া হয়েছে। মহামারি করোনার নতুন ধরন ওমিক্রন বিশ্বব্যাপী আতঙ্ক ছড়াচ্ছে। ধরনটি দ্রুত ছাড়তে পারে- এ আশঙ্কায় দেশের রপ্তানি আয়ের প্রধান খাত তৈরি পোশাক কারখানাগুলোকে ১৭টি নির্দেশনা দিয়ে তা মানতে বলেছে পোশাকশিল্প মালিকদের শীর্ষ সংগঠন বিজিএমইএ।

Costly yarn turns more orders into more liabilities for apparel exporters With export orders secured three to six months ago, Bangladeshi apparel exporters now struggle to log even the break-even costs thanks to recent price hikes of cotton yarn - used for making T-shirts to jeans. "While receiving the orders in July-August, it was beyond our wildest imagination that the yarn price would spiral this much" Shahidullah Azim, vice-president of BGMEA, told The Business Standard Saturday. He said pricier yarns would push many of the apparel-makers to losses as the export orders would eventually turn out to be bank liabilities.

জাতীয় বস্ত্র দিবস উদযাপন: বস্ত্র ও পোশাক খাতে স্বতন্ত্র মন্ত্রণালয় চান উদ্যোক্তারা তৈরি পোশাক এবং বস্ত্র খাতের জন্য স্বতন্ত্র মন্ত্রণালয় চান উদ্যোক্তারা। জাতীয় বস্ত্র দিবস উদযাপন উপলক্ষে আয়োজিত এক সম্মাননা অনুষ্ঠানে গতকাল শনিবার বস্ত্র ও পোশাক সম্পর্কিত ৭টি সংগঠনের পক্ষ থেকে এ দাবি জানানো হয়েছে।গত প্রায় দুই বছর ধরে করোনা পরিস্থিতির মধ্যেও উৎপাদন সচল রাখা এবং কর্মসংস্থানে বিশেষ অবদান বিবেচনায় বিজিএমইএ, বিকেএমইএ, বিটিএমএসহ ৭টি সংগঠনকে সম্মাননা দেওয়া হয়। অনুষ্ঠানের প্রধান অতিথি বস্ত্র ও পাটমন্ত্রী গোলাম দস্তগীর গাজী সংগঠনগুলোর সভাপতিদের হাতে সম্মাননা ক্রেস্ট তুলে দেন। বিজিএমইএ সভাপতি ফারুক হাসান তার বক্তব্যে বস্ত্র ও পোশাক খাতের জন্য স্বতন্ত্র মন্ত্রণালয় প্রতিষ্ঠার দাবি জানান। কৃত্রিম আঁশের পোশাক উৎপাদনে বিভিন্ন কাঁচামাল আমদানিতে শুল্ক্ক ছাড়েরও দাবি করেন তিনি।

রফতানি আয় পাঁচ দশকে ৯৬ গুণ বেড়েছে গত নভেম্বর পর্যন্ত হিসাব অনুযায়ী, বিশ্বে বাংলাদেশেই তৈরি পোশাক খাতে সবচেয়ে বেশি সবুজ কারখানা রয়েছে। বিশ্বে এখন যে ১০টি প্লাটিনাম গ্রীন কারখানা রয়েছে তার মধ্যে বাংলাদেশেই রয়েছে ৭টি। পোশাক খাতে বাংলাদেশে এখন গ্রীন ফ্যাক্টরি ১৫০টি। এ বিষয়ে বিজিএমইএ সভাপতি ফারুক হাসান বলেন, গ্রীন ফ্যাক্টরি দেশের গার্মেন্টস শিল্পে নতুন মাত্রা যোগ করেছে। এতে বিদেশী ক্রেতারা আকৃষ্ট হবেন। রফতানি বাড়বে। তিনি বলেন, বর্তমানে যারাই ফ্যাক্টরি করছেন, তারা গত কয়েক বছরের অভিজ্ঞতার আলোকেই কারখানা স্থাপন করছেন। কারণ আন্তর্জাতিক মানসম্পন্ন কারখানা না হলে ক্রেতারা অর্ডার দেবেন না। তাই উদ্যোক্তারা ব্যবসার আইন-কানুন ও দেশের আইন মেনে ব্যবসা পরিচালনা করছেন। বিজিএমইএ সভাপতি বলেন, আমরা এখন পরিবেশবান্ধব কারখানা গড়ে তুলছি।

Mohiuddin Rubel, director of the BGMEA said that the new Covid variants are emerging and the global economy is witnessing immediate shocks. “Buyers, who are following a cautious step since the first wave of the pandemic, will certainly be more cautious now. Europe, particularly, will take more time to recover from the retail industry slowdown, which is worrisome for us,” he added.

পোশাক খাতে ওমিক্রন-আতঙ্ক এ বিষয়ে জানতে চাইলে বিজিএমইএর প্রথম সহসভাপতি শহিদুল্লাহ আজিম আজকের পত্রিকাকে বলেন, ‘আমরা সবেমাত্র করোনা মহামারি থেকে ঘুরে দাঁড়াচ্ছিলাম। অনেক অর্ডার আসছিল। তখনই এই ভাইরাসের কথা শোনা যাচ্ছে। এ কারণে ইউরোপীয় ইউনিয়নের ১৯টি দেশে এখন বিধিনিষেধ আরোপ করেছে। এখন আমি আমার দেশে যতই উৎপাদন করি তাতে কোনো লাভ নেই। ওরা যদি দোকানপাট চালু না করে তাহলে তো আমাদের ঢুকতে দেবে না। ফলে আমরা খুবই শঙ্কায় আছি। তবে আমরা আশাবাদী ওরা ওমিক্রনের সংক্রমণ নিয়ন্ত্রণ করতে পারবে, যেভাবে আগেরবার করোনাভাইরাস নিয়ন্ত্রণ করেছে।’

ওমিক্রনের প্রাদুর্ভাব: বৈশ্বিক অর্থনীতিতে আবারো ক্ষতের আশঙ্কা আইএমএফের কভিডের পরপর কয়েকটি প্রবাহের অভিঘাত কাটিয়ে ঘুরে দাঁড়ানোর পথে বৈশ্বিক অর্থনীতি। এর মধ্যেই আবার শনাক্ত হয়েছে নভেল করোনাভাইরাসের নতুন ধরন ওমিক্রন। ধরনটির দ্রুত সংক্রমণ ছড়ানোর সক্ষমতা এরই মধ্যে বিশ্বব্যাপী নতুন করে আতঙ্কের সঞ্চার করেছে। আন্তর্জাতিক মুদ্রা তহবিলও (আইএমএফ) এখন ওমিক্রনের প্রভাবে বৈশ্বিক অর্থনীতিতে আবারো বড় আকারের ক্ষত দেখা দিতে পারে বলে আশঙ্কা করছে।

FBCCI preparing 10-year master plan to develop trade and economy FBCCI has announced that the trade body has been preparing a 10-year master plan for the development of trade and the economy of the country. The president of the apex trade body Md Jashim Uddin informed it at a press conference held at the FBCCI office on Saturday afternoon, adding they are developing the master plan to determine the necessary strategies for logistics in the coming days.

OP-ED: The fate of the apparel workers after industry automation Human labour used to do one thing cannot be used to do another. Therefore the labour used to do something is a cost. The cost being the things we don't get from other activities the labour could be doing instead. This means that the entire process of economic advance is the destruction of jobs. For only by using a machine to do the work can we free up that labour to another task. Automation which kills jobs is, in fact, what makes us richer. Automating RMG production doesn’t mean the world will want more clothes. So some workers will have to leave the RMG factories.
