BGMEA urges NBR to simplify business procedures BGMEA has urged the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to remove customs and bond-related obstacles from the way of business to expedite the growth of the apparel and textile industry. A delegation of BGMEA headed by President Faruque Hassan made the call during a meeting with NBR Chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem at the NBR office here on Thursday. The association also called for simplifying business procedures like the inclusion of new raw materials and other related materials with their harmonized system (HS) code in the bond licenses.

BGMEA Cup 2022 kicks off 6th edition of BGMEA Cup kicked off at Uttara Sector 4 Kallyan Samiti Field on January 20. BGMEA President Faruque Hassan inaugurated the inter-garment tournament. BGMEA Vice President (Finance) Khandoker Rafiqul Islam, Vice President Miran Ali, Directors Abdullah Hil Rakib and Mijanur Rahman, players of the participated teams were present at the inaugural ceremony. In the opening match, defending champion Bando Design Ltd was held to a 0-0 draw by Tusuka Group. Mid and upper-managements of 16 garment factories in Bangladesh are participating in the BGMEA Cup 2022. They are – Fakir Fashions Ltd, Team Group, Babylon Group, Epyllion Group, Setara Group, Sayem Group, Mosharaf Apparels Studio Ltd, Snowtex Outerwear Ltd, Laila Group, Apparels Village Ltd, Comfit by Youth Group, Sterling Group, Apparel Industry, Torque Fashions, Tusuka Group and Bando Design Ltd.

176 get CIP cards for role in export, trade The government awarded the Commercially Important Person (CIP) status cards 2018 to 176 businesspeople on Thursday for their outstanding contribution to the country's export and trade. Of them, 138 recipients were given the cards under export category, while 38 under trade category. Besides, some 46 persons got the cards as ex-officio of different trade-bodies and chambers. Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi handed over the CIP cards to the recipients at a city hotel. Speaking at the programme, Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi said many ready-made garments units are relocating themselves from China and Vietnam to Bangladesh. The country would be able to achieve an export target of US$80 billion by 2024. Local businesses require competitiveness before Bangladesh's final graduation from LDS status in 2026, he added.

Time to build infrastructure to support RMG export growth: Ashikur Rahman Tuhin, Managing Director of TAD Group and a former Director of BGMEA Bangladesh apparel industry has come a long way. The sector has made the largest contribution in transforming Bangladesh from a least developing country to a middle-income country. But as the saying goes, if one cannot seize opportunities, opportunities seize to come to them. The recent surge of our apparel orders is an opportunity we have to avail for the longer run. That will be only possible if we can build the infrastructure needed to hold on to the orders. We should start to build the infrastructure in 2022. If we can do that, though we could not achieve the $50 billion apparel export milestone in 2021 for valid reasons; reaching the milestone in 2024, when Bangladesh will be officially eligible as a middle-income country, would not be impossible at all.

‘Bangladesh an important trade partner of Australia’ With Bangladesh's economy growing steadily over the last 10-15 years, Australia has now become an important trading partner, says Obaidur Rahman, president of the Australia-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry. In FY20, Australia’s two-way goods and services trade with Bangladesh grew to over $2.6 billion, he further said. Two-way trade in goods alone is valued at $2 billion.

Sweater exporters in sourcing trouble as NBR tightens grip With only 200 workers, Kashpean Sweater in river port township Narayanganj had been exporting knitwear to western markets. As Kashpean does not have a bond licence on its own, the small-scale exporter would source raw materials such as yarn and accessories from third parties that had bonds to import those. But the knitwear-maker has been facing a sourcing hiccup for the last eight months as the National Board of Revenue (NBR) obstructs the third parties – often called deemed exporters – in selling the imported items to exporting sweater-makers.

বাজেটের কাজ শুরু, এবারও লক্ষ্য বিশাল আগামী ২০২২-২৩ অর্থবছরের বাজেট প্রণয়নের কাজ শুরু করেছে জাতীয় রাজস্ব বোর্ড (এনবিআর)। বাজেট প্রণয়নের কাজে সহায়তা করার জন্য প্রতিবারের মতো এবারও চারজন শুল্ক-কর কর্মকর্তাকে দায়িত্ব দেওয়া হয়েছে। তাঁরা বাজেট সমন্বয়কারী হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করবেন। গতকাল বৃহস্পতিবার এই কমিটি গঠন করা হয়। প্রধান বাজেট সমন্বয়কারী হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করবেন এনবিআরের প্রথম সচিব (কাস্টমস অব্যাহতি ও প্রকল্পসুবিধা) নেয়ামুল ইসলাম। অন্য বাজেট সমন্বয়কারীরা হলেন সংস্থাটির দ্বিতীয় সচিব আবদুল্লাহ আল মামুন, মাজেদুল হক ও জাহিদুল ইসলাম। এনবিআর সূত্রে জানা গেছে, শিগগিরই বিভিন্ন ব্যবসায়ী সংগঠন ও সমিতির কাছ থেকে বাজেট প্রস্তাব আহ্বান করা হবে। আর ফেব্রুয়ারি মাসের শেষের দিকে কিংবা মার্চের প্রথম সপ্তাহ থেকে এনবিআর প্রাক্–বাজেট আলোচনা শুরু করবে।
