Bangladesh’s growth priorities: Faruque Hassan, President, BGMEA There is no argument to the fact that much of Bangladesh's growth has been propelled by the private sector. Currently, more than 70% of Bangladesh's total investment is being drawn from the private sector itself. Especially in the post-pandemic world, when public resources are crucial for building the capacity of the country, the private sector will continue to play a pivotal role in Bangladesh's journey to the next phase of growth and development. However, it is also true that so far our growth has been overwhelmingly dependent on a few specific sectors and products. Going forward, most importantly we need to redefine our business model through innovation, value addition and technology upgrading to complement our stride towards environmental and social sustainability.

New York bill may push up Bangladesh’s garment export costs The bill, titled the Fashion Sustainability and Social Accountability Act, would require the fashion industry supplying to the US state to disclose if their products are sourced from areas with reported forced or child labour, or "sweatshop" working conditions. "This would mean that responsible sourcing will have to kick in at their end and at the same time the pressure on suppliers will also increase," Rubana Huq, former president of the BGMEA, told The Business Standard. Faruque Hassan, president of BGMEA, told TBS, "It will be clear what kind of impact the law, once it is passed, will have on Bangladesh's exports. Even if there are no major impacts, the cost will go up." "We have come a long way in terms of compliance or the environment. The world's best practices and green factories are now in Bangladesh. ইউরোপে পণ্য রপ্তানিতে নতুন যাত্রা শুরু বাংলাদেশ তৈরি পোশাক উৎপাদক ও রপ্তানিকারক সমিতির (বিজিএমইএ) নেতারা বলছেন, এখন ভিয়েতনামের চেয়ে অন্তত এক-দুই সপ্তাহের কম সময়ে ইতালির বন্দরে রপ্তানি পণ্য পাঠাতে পারবেন বাংলাদেশের রপ্তানিকারকেরা। বিজিএমইএর প্রথম সহসভাপতি সৈয়দ নজরুল ইসলাম প্রথম আলোকে বলেন, ‘রপ্তানি পণ্য কম সময়ে বিদেশি ক্রেতাদের হাতে তুলে দেওয়াটা বড় চ্যালেঞ্জ ছিল আমাদের। সরাসরি জাহাজ সেবা চালু হওয়ায় আমরা ভিয়েতনামের মতো প্রতিযোগী দেশের চেয়ে এক-দুই সপ্তাহ আগে ক্রেতাদের হাতে পণ্য তুলে দিতে পারব। তবে সরাসরি জাহাজ সেবায় প্রতি সপ্তাহে অন্তত তিনটি জাহাজ থাকতে হবে। না হলে পুরোপুরি সুফল পাওয়া যাবে না।’

তৈরি পোশাকশিল্প: নিউইয়র্কের নতুন বিলে শঙ্কা নয়, সুযোগ দেখছেন ব্যবসায়ীরা ফ্যাশন শিল্প খাতকে আরও জবাবদিহির মধ্যে আনতে বিস্তৃত ও স্থায়ী একটি আইন করতে যাচ্ছে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের নিউইয়র্ক রাজ্য। তৈরি পোশাক ও জুতা শিল্পে পরিবেশগত ও সামাজিক সুরক্ষার বিষয়টি নিশ্চিত করার লক্ষ্যে আইনটি করার প্রক্রিয়া চলছে। জানতে চাইলে তৈরি পোশাকশিল্পের মালিকদের সংগঠন বিজিএমইএর সহসভাপতি শহিদউল্লাহ আজিম প্রথম আলোকে বলেন, ‘নিউইয়র্কের নতুন বিলে আমাদের ব্যবসায় নেতিবাচক কোনো প্রভাব পড়বে না। যদি না ইচ্ছাকৃতভাবে কোনো সমস্যা সৃষ্টি করা হয়।’ তিনি আরও বলেন, ‘আমাদের শিল্পে শিশুশ্রম নেই। কাউকে জোরপূর্বক কাজও করানো হয় না।’ নতুন নিয়মকানুনে ব্যবসার খরচ বাড়বে কি না, এমন প্রশ্নের জবাবে তিনি বলেন, মনে হয় না খরচ বাড়বে।

BGMEA urges NBR to ease business procedures BGMEA has requested the NBR to simplify business procedures for seizing the new opportunities created for the readymade garment sector. "Business procedures including customs and bonds should be eased more in line with the emerging situations in order to seize new opportunities created for the industry," said a BGMEA statement, quoting its president Faruque Hassan. The RMG industry has been able to back on track after addressing mountainous challenges brought by the Covid-19 pandemic and the timely support of the government played a crucial role in the strong comeback, he said while speaking in a meeting with Hossain Ahmed, NBR Member (Customs Export, Bond and IT), on Thursday. BGMEA Vice President Shahidullah Azim, former First Vice Presidents S M Abu Tayeb and Nasir Uddin Chowdhury, and former Director Md. Munir Hossain were also present at the meeting.

As orders multiply, so does demand for RMG workers According to the manufacturers, a number of readymade garment factories are operating with a deficit of 10-20% of their worker capacities. Shovon Islam, managing director of Sparrow Group, said: “Several workers exited the industry at the beginning of Covid-19, and they did not come back. That is why the factories are facing this problem.” He also said that some of the workers have left the profession and joined other occupations, like driving autorickshaws, running small shops, and running tailoring shops. Shahidullah Azim, vice-president of the BGMEA, recently said in an interview that the problems will not be solved by recruiting only new workers as the sector needs skilled workers who are ready to operate machines.

আমদানির পালে হাওয়া, ১ মাসেই ব্যয় ৭২ হাজার কোটি টাকা শুধু রপ্তানি নয়, আমদানির পালেও হাওয়া লেগেছে। রেকর্ডের পর রেকর্ড গড়ে চলেছে বাংলাদেশ। এতে অর্থনীতি গতি ফিরে পেয়েছে বলে মনে করছেন অর্থনীতিবিদ ও ব্যবসায়ী নেতারা। রপ্তানি আয়ের প্রধান খাত তৈরি পোশাক শিল্প মালিকদের শীর্ষ সংগঠন বিজিএমইএ সভাপতি ফারুক হাসান বলেন, ‘করোনার নতুন ধরন ওমিকনের মধ্যেও আমাদের রপ্তানির প্রধান বাজার ইউরোপ-আমেরিকায় রপ্তানি বাড়ছে। এখন করোনাকে সঙ্গে নিয়েই সব দেশে অর্থনৈতিক কর্মকাণ্ড পরিচালিত হচ্ছে। মানুষ আগের মতো পোশাক কিনছে। সে কারণে প্রচুর অর্ডার পাওয়া যাচ্ছে। রপ্তানিতে উল্লম্ফন হচ্ছে। দেশের অর্থনীতি ঘুরে দাঁড়িয়েছে। এতে রপ্তানিসহ অন্যান্য খাতের প্রয়োজনীয় কাঁচামাল, ক্যাপিটাল মেশিনারিসহ অন্যান্য পণ্যের আমদানি বাড়ছে। তার প্রভাব পড়েছে সামগ্রিক আমদানিতে।’

কনটেইনারপ্রবাহে শ্লথগতি: বিশ্বজুড়ে পণ্য পেতে অপেক্ষা বাড়ছে ব্যবসায়ীদের সাম্প্রতিক শিপিং ডাটা অনুসারে, খুচরা পণ্যের ক্রমবর্ধমান চাহিদা এবং কভিডজনিত বিধিনিষেধের কারণে বিশ্বজুড়ে পণ্যের প্রবাহ গতিশীল করার প্রচেষ্টা সফল হচ্ছে না। যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের প্রধান বন্দরগুলোয় বিলম্ব বিশেষত গুরুতর হয়েছে। আর এর পরোক্ষ প্রভাব ছড়িয়ে পড়ছে বিশ্বজুড়ে। কনটেইনারপ্রবাহে এ শ্লথগতি ব্যবসায়ীদের ওপর চাপ বাড়াচ্ছে। পরিবহন ব্যয় বেড়ে ঊর্ধ্বমুখী হচ্ছে মূল্যস্ফীতির পারদ।

Bangladesh to directly ship apparel exports to Europe Container ship Songa Cheetah is set to arrive at Chattogram port on Saturday and leave for Italy’s Porto di Ravenna on Monday on the first direct commercial freight trip from Bangladesh to Europe.“This journey will not only export goods to Italy, but also open a new horizon for Bangladesh’s exports to Europe,” said Rakibul Alam Chowdhury, a vice-president of BGMEA. The direct shipping service will reduce the time of delivery by 50 percent on top of saving costs, he said. He believes other European countries, such as Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece and Spain, will begin taking goods directly from Bangladesh if the Chattogram-Ravenna trips become successful. “This will be fruitful if more and larger ships are pressed into service.”

Strengthening garment industry vital for LDC graduation: Report Asian countries graduating from the category of least developed countries (LDCs) need to take measures to bolster their textile and clothing sector, particularly in response to the economic impact of Covid-19, said a report prepared by the World Trade Organization (WTO) and three UN bodies. The report titled "The Textile and Clothing Sector in Asian Graduating Least Developed Countries: Challenges and Ways Forward," published on 1 February, focuses on countries such as Bangladesh, Laos and Nepal, where the textile and clothing sector is a major industry and will be significantly impacted by LDC graduation.

বেসরকারি অর্থনৈতিক অঞ্চল: সায় পাচ্ছে না অনেক প্রতিষ্ঠান এক কোটি মানুষের কর্মসংস্থান সৃষ্টির লক্ষ্যে সরকারি-বেসরকারি মিলিয়ে সারা দেশে মোট ১০০টি অর্থনৈতিক অঞ্চল প্রতিষ্ঠার প্রতিশ্রুতি রয়েছে সরকারের। কিন্তু এখন সরকারি অর্থনৈতিক অঞ্চলগুলোকে যতটা গুরুত্ব দেওয়া হচ্ছে, ততটা পাচ্ছে না বেসরকারি খাত। সরকারি পর্যায়ে অনুমোদন পাওয়া অর্থনৈতিক অঞ্চলগুলোর দিকেই কেবল নজর রয়েছে বাংলাদেশ অর্থনৈতিক অঞ্চল কর্তৃপক্ষের (বেজা)। বড় কোম্পানিগুলো দেশের বিভিন্ন এলাকায় অর্থনৈতিক অঞ্চল স্থাপনের জন্য প্রস্তাব জমা দিয়ে রাখলেও ২০১৯ সালের পর একটিও অনুমোদন পায়নি। এতে সরকারের এক কোটি মানুষের নতুন কর্মসংস্থানের প্রতিশ্রুতি পূরণ অনিশ্চিত হয়ে পড়তে পারে।
