Two more RMG units get global green recognition The number of green garment factories in Bangladesh has reached 173 as two more units received the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the US Green Building Council (USGBC) yesterday. Of the two factories, Aman Tex Limited located in Boiragirchala of Gazipur received the highest-rank of platinum while Ayesha Fashion Ltd in Dhaka received gold, the second highest ranking. Md Shahidullah Azim, vice-president of the BGMEA, said although international retailers and brands do not pay any additional price for the green initiative, local manufacturers are building LEED certified green factories to be compliant and brighten the industry's image as well as that of the country.

আরো দুটি সবুজ কারখানার স্বীকৃতি পেল বাংলাদেশ বাংলাদেশের আরো দুটি তৈরি পোশাক কারখানাকে সবুজ কারখানা হিসেবে স্বীকৃতি দিয়েছে ইউনাইটেড স্টেটস গ্রিন বিল্ডিং কাউন্সিল (ইউএসজিবিসি)। এর মধ্যে গাজীপুরের আমান টেক্সটাইল লিমিটেড পেয়েছে প্লাটিনাম রেটিং এবং রাজধানীর মধ্যে আয়েশা ফ্যাশন লিমিটেড গোল্ড রেটিং পেয়েছে। গতকাল সোমবার এই তথ্য নিশ্চিত করেছেন বিজিএমইএর পরিচালক মহিউদ্দিন রুবেল। তিনি জানান, নতুন করে সবুজ কারখানার সনদ পাওয়া দুই কারখানার গাজীপুরের আমান টেক্সটাইল লিমিটেডকে গত ২৭ সেপ্টেম্বর স্বীকৃতি দিয়েছে ইউনাইটেড স্টেটস গ্রিন বিল্ডিং কাউন্সিল।

Exporters worried about stuck payments as French fashion buyer goes bankrupt French fashion chain Camaieu's bankruptcy declared by the Lille court on Wednesday and the subsequent closure of all its shops on Saturday have left exporters in Bangladesh worried about the recovery of their outstanding payments from the debt-ridden retailer. BGMEA Vice-President Shahidullah Azim termed Camaieu getting bankrupt as "a matter of great concern" and said that the BGMEA will ask all its members to provide information about their outstanding payments. "We will use all possible tools to realise the dues," he added.

Govt getting ready for CEPA talks with India Bangladesh has started the groundwork to begin negotiations for signing a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with India, as has been agreed upon by top leaders of both countries last month. If it is finally signed, the CEPA will be the first, full-fledged trade agreement for Bangladesh. The country has been lobbying with major trading partners for many years to get free trade agreements (FTAs) signed.

Bangladesh is now a global leader in green factories Talking to Dhaka Tribune, Mohiuddin Rubel, director of the BGMEA said that Bangladesh is the leader in this. “Once people questioned investing in a Leed-certified factory but today we can see fruits of the labor by visionary entrepreneurs.” He added saying that initially, green factories cost more to establish but if you think about sustainability, you have to invest here to stay competitive as there is no way to move forward by ignoring the environment.” He added saying that nowadays, buyers are very cautious about protecting the environment.

বৈদেশিক বাণিজ্যে ভারসাম্য: আমদানি নিয়ন্ত্রণ হলেও কমছে না ঘাটতি সংশ্লিষ্টরা বলছেন, আমদানিতে নতুন এলসি খোলা কমলেও পুরনো এলসি নিষ্পত্তি বাড়ছে। রেমিট্যান্সের বড় পতনের পাশাপাশি রফতানি প্রবৃদ্ধিও শ্লথ হয়ে এসেছে। এ কারণে ব্যালান্স অব পেমেন্টের ঘাটতিও বড় হচ্ছে। এছাড়া গত অর্থবছরের রেকর্ড আমদানির দায় পরিশোধের চাপে বৈদেশিক বাণিজ্যের রিজার্ভও ধারাবাহিকভাবে কমছে। সব মিলিয়ে বৈদেশিক মুদ্রার সংকট ও শঙ্কা কাটিয়ে উঠতে আরো অন্তত এক বছর সময় লাগবে।

২০২৬ সালের আগেই ‘সেপা’ চুক্তির সম্ভাবনা ভারতের সঙ্গে বাণিজ্য বিনিয়োগ বাড়াতে ২০২৬ সালের আগেই সমন্বিত অর্থনৈতিক অংশীদারি চুক্তি (সেপা) করতে চায় বাংলাদেশ। সম্প্রতি প্রধানমন্ত্রী ভারত সফরের পর দুই দেশের সরকারি পর্যায়ে চুক্তির বিষয়ে ইতিবাচক আলোচনা হয়। এই পরিপ্রেক্ষিতে চুক্তি বাস্তবায়নে আলোচনা শুরু করতে দিল্লিকে চিঠি পাঠিয়েছে বাংলাদেশ। সংশ্লিষ্ট ব্যক্তিরা বলছেন, ভারত-বাংলাদেশের মধ্যে প্রস্তাবিত সেপা স্বাক্ষর হলে দুই দেশের বাণিজ্য কয়েক গুণ বেড়ে যাবে।

Govt nearly ready to hire 3 global port operators The government is nearing the end of the process to select and appoint three foreign port operators to run or oversee and build different facilities of the Chattogram Port, including the Patenga Container Terminal (PCT) and the Chattogram Bay Terminal. The Public Private Partnership Authority (PPPA) is making effective progress to complete the steps, according to officials. Officials at the port and PPPA said the government has decided to hire the Red Sea Gateway Terminal (RSGT) of Saudi Arabia to run PCT, which is nearly ready for operation and will have the capacity to handle 450,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containers annually. Meanwhile, two major global operators — Singapore-based PSA Singapore and DP World of the UAE — have been shortlisted to work on the proposed Bay Terminal, officials said.
