Bangladesh loses $2b annually: BGMEA The freight forwarder agents are taking illegal money from the exporters which causes a loss of approximately $2 billion in earnings annually, BGMEA has alleged. The trade body also claimed that the whole illegal system is hampering the ease of doing business as well. In this regard, the apex body of the apparel sector wrote a letter to the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) on January 16 blaming the agents who had laundered crores of taka annually by rules of the CPA. Commenting on the issue, BGMEA Vice President Shahidullah Azim told The Business Post, “As per our business policy and the government rules, buyers are bearing all sorts of expenses after receiving the goods following the C&F clearance. But agents are taking up to Tk 6,000 per voucher, which is a punishable offence, the businessmen said, adding “They are taking crores of taka annually in the name of so-called terminal handling charges.”

Loans from export dev fund made costlier Bangladesh Bank yesterday raised the interest rate on loans availed from its export development fund (EDF) by 50 percentage points to make borrowing costlier in an effort to save foreign currencies. As per the new decision, if manufacturers and exporters take loans from the EDF, they have to pay interest at the rate of 4.5 per cent whereas previously it was 4 per cent.

Bangladeshi garment makers shipped $147 million worth of their produce to the transcontinental country in 2020, which experienced a 23 per cent year-on-year fall to hit $113 million the next year. However, the next year export to Turkish markets rose significantly, as the Turks bought $247 million worth of clothing items from Bangladesh. Apparel shipment to Kuwait has nearly doubled each year since 2020.

নৈতিক মূল্যে পণ্য কেনার আহ্বান বিজিএমইএর বিজিএমইএ সভাপতি ফারুক হাসান বলেছেন, বৈশ্বিক ক্রেতারা ‘মেড ইন বাংলাদেশ’ ট্যাগযুক্ত পোশাক সোর্সিংয়ে বেশি আত্মবিশ্বাসী এবং আগ্রহ বোধ করেন। কারণ তারা জানেন তাদের পণ্য যে কারখানাগুলোতে তৈরি করা হয়, সেগুলো নিরাপদ এবং পরিবেশগতভাবে টেকসই। তিনি বলেন, এ দেশের কারখানাগুলোতে শ্রমিকদের জন্য কাজের সুবিধাজনক পরিবেশ রয়েছে। ব্যাপক নিরাপত্তামূলক উদ্যোগ নেওয়ার পাশাপাশি ব্যাপক সচেতনতা বৃদ্ধির প্রশিক্ষণ কর্মসূচিগুলো বাংলাদেশের পোশাক খাতে উল্লেখযোগ্য পরিবর্তন এনেছে। শ্রমিকরা এখন তাদের সব অধিকার এবং কল্যাণ সম্পর্কে আগের চেয়ে অনেক বেশি সচেতন। বুধবার (১ ফেব্রুয়ারি) যুক্তরাজ্যভিত্তিক রিটেইল কোম্পানি টেসকো আয়োজিত ‘রেসপেক্ট’ প্রোগ্রামের অংশীজনদের এনগেজমেন্ট সেশনে তিনি এসব কথা বলেন।

রপ্তানি বিল নগায়দায়নে ১০৩ টাকা দেবে ব্যাংক রপ্তানি বিল নগদায়নে প্রতি ডলারে এখন থেকে ১০৩ টাকা দেবে ব্যাংকগুলো। এতোদিন দেওয়া হচ্ছিল ১০২ টাকা। আর রেমিট্যান্সে ১০৭ টাকা অপরিবর্তিত থাকবে। বৈদেশিক মুদ্রা লেনদেনকারী ব্যাংকগুলোর সংগঠন বাফেদা ও প্রধান নির্বাহীদের সংগঠন এবিবির মঙ্গলবারের যৌথ সভায় এমন সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া হয়। বুধবার থেকে নতুন দর কার্যকর হয়েছে। রপ্তানি বিল নগদায়ন ও রেমিট্যান্স ভাঙ্গানোয় ডলারের দরে পার্থক্য কমাতে এমন সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া হয়েছে বলে জানা গেছে।

TAD GROUP & KIK Brand organized a sanitary napkin program in NOFS garments Kik is a popular clothing brand, primarily known for its casual and comfortable clothing for men and women. The brand are doing this distribution for the last 11 years. KIK provided sanitary napkins to 8 garments with 8000 female workers. According to the company, they have the plan to distribute more sanitary napkins to the women of Bangladesh. Kik is very much concerned about the health of women.

ছয় মাসে কমপ্লায়েন্স না হলে বন্ধ হবে ২১৩ কারখানা নির্ধারিত সময়ের মধ্যে কারখানা কমপ্লায়েন্স না হলে অর্থাৎ নিরাপদ পরিবেশ নিশ্চিতে ব্যর্থ হলে ২১৩টি কারখানাকে বন্ধ করে দেয়ার হুঁশিয়ারি দিয়েছে সরকার। পরিদর্শনে আশানারূপ নম্বর না পাওয়ায় ১৭টি কারখানাকে তিন মাস এবং ২০৬টি কারখানাকে ছয় মাস সময় বেঁধে দিয়েছে সরকার। এই সময়ের মধ্যে এসব প্রতিষ্ঠান নিজেদের সংশোধন করতে না পারলে এগুলো বন্ধ করে দেয়া হবে। স্বরাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রণালয়ের সভাকক্ষে বুধবার প্রধানমন্ত্রীর বেসরকারি শিল্প ও বিনিয়োগ উপদেষ্টা সালমান ফজলুর রহমানের সভাপতিত্বে ‘কলকারখানা, শিল্প ও বাণিজ্যিক প্রতিষ্ঠানে দুর্ঘটনারোধ ও নিরাপদ কর্মপরিবেশ নিশ্চিতকরণের লক্ষ্যে গঠিত কমিটির’ দ্বিতীয় সভায় এই সিদ্ধান্ত হয়েছে।

ডলারের অভাবে ব্যবসায়ীরা এলসি খুলতে পারছেন না কেন্দ্রীয় ব্যাংকের নির্দেশনা অনুযায়ী আমদানির জন্য শতভাগ টাকা দেওয়া হলেও ব্যাংক ডলার দিতে পারছে না। ডলার-সংকট মোকাবিলায় অপ্রয়োজনীয় পণ্য আমদানি নিরুত্সাহিত করতে কেন্দ্রীয় ব্যাংক নানা ধরনের বিধিনিষেধ আরোপ করেছে। অথচ বিলাসী নয়, এমন পণ্যেও শতভাগ মার্জিন রাখা হচ্ছে। ফলে বাধ্য হয়ে খোলাবাজার থেকে কাঁচামাল চড়া দামে সংগ্রহ করে কারখানা চালু রাখার চেষ্টা করা হচ্ছে। ব্যবসায়ীরা বলছেন, যারা ডলারে আয় করে না, তারাও এখন এলসি খুলতে পারছেন না। এর মধ্যে দেশীয় চাহিদা পূরণে যেসব শিল্পপ্রতিষ্ঠান পণ্য উৎপাদন করে তারাও এলসি খুলতে পারছে না।
