Bangladesh now a hub for making winter jackets Bangladesh has gradually turned into a major manufacturing hub for winter jackets as work orders are mainly shifting away from China due to higher production costs and a shortage of skilled workers in the country. Abdullah Hil Rakib, managing director of TEAM Group, a leading outerwear exporter, said his company ships winter jackets worth $10 every month. Faruque Hassan, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), said local garment exporters get almost half of what their Vietnamese counterparts make from garment exports due to various reasons. This means international buyers will pay $5 for a t-shirt made in Vietnam but the same product would get $2.5 if made in Bangladesh. One of the main reasons behind the lower pricing for Bangladeshi garment items is the production of basic items.

H&M donates books, mannequins to support RMG professionals H&M Group, a multinational clothing giant, contributed books and dressmaker mannequins to the BGMEA Centre and BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology (BUFT) to support the education and skill development of next-generation RMG professionals. The books and mannequins will be key tools for the students of BUFT as well as trainees of the CIEOSH, as they gather knowledge and learn the necessary skills and techniques needed to create high-quality garments. Ziaur Rahman, country manager of H&M Group, presented the books and mannequins to Faruque Hassan, president of BGMEA, at the trade body's complex in Dhaka's Uttara on Tuesday. Miran Ali, vice president of BGMEA, also attended the ceremony.

Traders eye 5 times more exports to Uzbekistan If the immense potential of trade between Bangladesh and Uzbekistan can be realised, it is possible to increase exports to that country by five times, said traders. Uzbekistan can be a good market for various Bangladeshi products and services including medicines, leather products, bicycles, ceramic products, frozen food, furniture, handicrafts, clothes, tourism, IT, agricultural processing, plastics, and human resources, said entrepreneurs at a press conference organised at the Capital Market Journalist Forum's office in Dhaka yesterday.

Bangabandhu industrial award policy amended The industries ministry has brought changes to the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Industrial Award (BSMIA) Policy in order to align it with the government's visions and plans, including the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 and the Vision 2041, and meet the challenges of the fourth industrial revolution. The ministry issued a gazette notification on March 12 and the new policy will replace the one unveiled in 2019.

RMG industry: Women's upward mobility very limited: Study Upward mobility or career progression of women workers in the billion-dollar apparel industry is extremely limited, according to latest research findings. "An estimated 86 per cent of the workers joined garment factories as helpers while 66 per cent left as operators and only 1.0 per cent as supervisors," reads the study report. The Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI), GIZ and Brac University jointly carried out the research styled 'The Declining Number of Women Workers in the Bangladesh RMG Industry'. The Sustainable Textile Initiative: Together for Change (STITCH) funded the research done with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands.

বিসিআই-বিসিসির সমঝোতা স্মারক সই: বাংলাদেশ-ভারত বাণিজ্যে খুলবে নতুন দ্বার ব্যবসা-বাণিজ্য সম্প্রসারণে একটি সমঝোতা স্মারক স্বাক্ষর করেছে বাংলাদেশ চেম্বার অব ইন্ডাস্ট্রিজ (বিসিআই) ও ভারত চেম্বার অব কমার্স (বিসিসি)। এ সমঝোতা স্মারক স্বাক্ষরের ফলে বাংলাদেশ-ভারতের ব্যবসা-বাণিজ্য সম্প্রসারণের ক্ষেত্রে নতুন এক দ্বার খুলবে বলে মনে করছে দুদেশের প্রতিনিধিরা। গতকাল রাজধানীর মতিঝিলে বিসিআই বোর্ডরুমে এ সমঝোতা স্মারক স্বাক্ষর হয়। এতে বিসিআই সভাপতি আনোয়ার-উল আলম চৌধুরী (পারভেজ) এবং বিসিসি সভাপতি এনজি খৈতান স্বাক্ষর করেন।
