Economic pressure deepens as export, remittance dip Exports and remittances, two major sources of foreign currencies for Bangladesh, plunged in April, a bad omen for the economy as it deals with multiple challenges, including a dollar crisis, an elevated level of import costs and falling reserves. Faruque Hassan, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, said the export of apparel items had been declining for the last few months, albeit slowly. Recently, the export fall was tackled by the higher prices of value-added garment items. But now both quality and quantity can't tackle the export slide. Hassan says if the bank interest rate in the western countries is not hiked further and the old stock of the unsold garment items finishes, there is a possibility that sales of garment items will go up from July.

Bangladesh’s exports to India can go up by 300%: envoy Bangladesh's exports to India may increase by 300 per cent in a year if the multimodal transport connectivity, including roads and highways, waterways, coastal shipping and railway, can be optimally utilised, said Pranay Kumar Verma, Indian high commissioner to Bangladesh, yesterday. "Better connectivity is indeed the centre for improving the ease of doing business and ease of living," he told a seminar on "Multimodal Connectivity between India and Bangladesh" organised by Unnayan Shamannay at Bishwo Shahitto Kendro in Dhaka.

IMF seeks info on non-repatriation of export proceeds The visiting staff consultation team of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has sought to know about the reasons behind the non-repatriation of overdue export proceeds from the authorities concerned. During a meeting with Senior Commerce Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh at his secretariat office on Tuesday, the international lender stated that Bangladesh has $3 billion of unrepatriated export proceeds. However, the commerce ministry has asked the lender to provide detailed information on how much money has not been repatriated in which years. According to the senior commerce secretary, the IMF said exporters are not repatriating the proceeds of exports properly. The organisation also asked the authorities to find out whether export earnings are being left abroad. Tapan said Bangladesh Bank is looking into the matter.

Govt to revisit trade negotiation structure before LDC graduation The government is going to revisit the existing trade-negotiation structure ahead of graduation from the poor-country club for ensuring efficient and time-bound agreements with other countries, officials said. The planned review aims to strengthen the country's negotiation capacity to successfully face the looming challenges of the post-graduation trade regime, they added. The planned negotiation setup would be given a permanent shape. The ministry of commerce (MoC) will sit this week with the ministries, divisions, and departments concerned alongside the stakeholders, academicians, think tanks, and research organisations, among others, to get their views on revisiting the trade negotiating structure, officials said.

ডলারের একই রেট নির্ধারণের তাগিদ: রপ্তানি বাড়ানোর পরামর্শ আইএমএফের চলমান বৈশ্বিক সংকটের মতো চ্যালেঞ্জ মোকাবিলা করেই রপ্তানি আয় বাড়ানোর পরামর্শ দিয়েছে আন্তর্জাতিক মুদ্রা তহবিল (আইএমএফ)। রপ্তানির প্রধান গন্তব্য ইউরোপ-আমেরিকার মতো বাজারে মূল্যস্ফীতি বাড়ায় সেখানে রপ্তানি কমে যাওয়ার আশঙ্কা করা হচ্ছে। এ অবস্থায় রপ্তানির লক্ষ্যমাত্রা অর্জন একটি বড় চ্যালেঞ্জ। তবে সেই চ্যালেঞ্জ সামলে নিয়ে কিভাবে রপ্তানি প্রবৃদ্ধি ধরে রাখা যায় সে বিষয়ে করুণীয় নির্ধারণ ও তা বাস্তবায়নের ওপর জোর দিয়েছে সংস্থাটি। এ ছাড়া আমদানি-রপ্তানিতে ডলার রেট একই হারে নির্ধারণের তাগিদ দিয়েছে সংস্থাটি। মঙ্গলবার ওয়াশিংটনভিত্তিক ঋণদাতা সংস্থা আইএমএফের সফররত প্রতিনিধি দল সচিবালয়ে বাণিজ্য মন্ত্রণালয়ের সঙ্গে অনুষ্ঠিত বৈঠকে এই পরামর্শ দেয়।

Textile firms bear the brunt of dollar, energy crises in March quarter Textile and apparel industry in the country incurred losses, and many of them saw lower profits in the January-March quarter of the current fiscal owing to energy shortage, strong dollar and a slowdown in global market demand caused by the Russia-Ukraine war. The industry entrepreneurs said that the dollar shortage affected the local textile industry as most of them are not able to open letters of credit (LC) for the import of raw cotton despite it becoming cheaper in the global market, affecting apparel prices.

FDI inflow up despite economic headwinds The foreign direct investment (FDI) inflow rose last year despite Bangladesh’s economy facing serious headwinds, triggered by the Covid aftermath, and ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Net FDI inflow reached $3.47 billion at the end of 2022, up by 20.18 per cent compared year-on-year, shows latest data from the Bangladesh Bank. The figure stood at $2.89 billion in 2021 and $2.56 billion in 2020 – when the Covid-19 pandemic struck Bangladesh hard.

LC opening for imports drops in July-March The opening of letter of credit for imports plunged by about 25.38 per cent in the July-March period of the current financial year 2022-23 due to various restrictions on imports. According to Bangladesh Bank data, LC opening dropped to $51.36 billion in July-March in FY23, a decrease of $17.48 billion compared with that of $68.84 billion in the same period of FY22.
