প্রথম আলো
ক্রেতাদের কাছে বিজিএমইএর চিঠি, ১ ডিসেম্বর থেকে পণ্যের নতুন মূল্য চায় বাংলাদেশে তৈরি পোশাকশ্রমিকদের ন্যূনতম মজুরি বাড়ানো হয়েছে—আমেরিকান অ্যাপারেল অ্যান্ড ফুটওয়্যার অ্যাসোসিয়েশনকে (এএএফএ) এই তথ্য আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে জানিয়েছে পোশাকশিল্প মালিকদের সংগঠন বিজিএমইএ। এএএফএর সভাপতি স্টিভেন ল্যামারের উদ্দেশে লেখা এক চিঠিতে বিজিএমইএর সভাপতি ফারুক হাসান বলেছেন, নতুন মজুরি বাস্তবায়নে ক্রেতাদের সহযোগিতা প্রয়োজন। ক্রেতারা বাংলাদেশ থেকে পণ্য ক্রয়ের ক্ষেত্রে দায়িত্বশীলতার পরিচয় দেবে, সেই প্রত্যাশা করেন ফারুক হাসান। চিঠিতে ফারুক হাসান বলেন, দেশের পোশাকমালিকেরা নতুন মজুরি বাস্তবায়ন করবেন। সে জন্য ক্রেতাদের সহযোগিতা প্রয়োজন। আগামী ১ ডিসেম্বর থেকে যেসব পণ্য জাহাজিকরণ করা হবে, নতুন মজুরির আলোকে তার মূল্য সমন্বয় করা প্রয়োজন বলে জানিয়েছেন তিনি।

খুলছে পোশাক কারখানা শ্রমিকরাও ফিরছেন কাজে শ্রমিকদের মজুরি ইস্যুকে কেন্দ্র করে পোশাক শিল্প এলাকাগুলোয় গত কয়েক দিনের অস্থিতিশীল পরিস্থিতি শান্ত হতে শুরু করেছে। ক্রম পর্যায়ে খুলতে শুরু করেছে বন্ধ ঘোষণা করা পোশাক কারখানা, কাজে ফিরতে শুরু করেছেন শ্রমিকরাও। বেশি সহিংসতা ছড়িয়ে পড়া গাজীপুরের কাশিমপুর ও কোনাবাড়ী এলাকার ৩টি পোশাক কারখানা ছাড়া অন্য সব পোশাক কারখানা এরই মধ্যে খুলে দেওয়া হয়েছে। কারখানাগুলোয়ও স্বাভাবিক উৎপাদন কাজ শুরু হয়েছে। পোশাক মালিকদের সংগঠন বিজিএমইএর পক্ষ থেকে এসব তথ্য জানানো হয়।

Egypt ambassador meets BGMEA president to discuss mutual trade potential Ambassador of Egypt to Bangladesh, Omar Fahmy paid a courtesy visit to Faruque Hassan, President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), at BGMEA Complex in the capital’s Uttara on Monday. The meeting focused on key issues aimed at boosting bilateral trade and exploring mutually beneficial trade and investment opportunities. The Egyptian Ambassador was accompanied by Mina Makary, Second Secretary at the embassy. BGMEA Directors Asif Ashraf, Abdullah Hil Rakib, Chair of BGMEA Standing Committee on Press, Publication and Publicity Shovon Islam, Chair of BGMEA Standing Committee on Trade Fair Mohammad Kamal Uddin and Chairman of Mithela Group Md. Azahar Khan were also present at the meeting.

মিশরে পোশাক রপ্তানি বাড়ানোর সুযোগ আছে: বিজিএমইএ সভাপতি মিশরের বাজারে পোশাক রপ্তানি বাড়ানোর যথেষ্ট সুযোগ আছে বলে অভিমত প্রকাশ করেছেন বাংলাদেশ পোশাক প্রস্তুতকারক ও রপ্তানিকারক সমিতির (বিজিএমইএ) সভাপতি ফারুক হাসানে। মিশরে পোশাক রপ্তানি বাড়ানোর বিষয়ে বাংলাদেশের গভীর আগ্রহ আছে বলেও জানিয়েছেন তিনি। সোমবার (১৩ নভেম্বর) বাংলাদেশে নিযুক্ত মিশরের রাষ্ট্রদূত ওমর ফাহমির সঙ্গে সাক্ষাৎকালে এ আগ্রহের কথা জানান বিজিএমইএ’র সভাপতি। এ সময় দূতাবাসের দ্বিতীয় সচিব মিনা মাকারি উপস্থিত ছিলেন।

RMG workers to earn minimum Tk16,150 per month: BGMEA After the implementation of the new wage structure, an entry level readymade garment worker will take home at least Tk 16,150 per month, claimed BGMEA. In an open letter to the media titled, “The impact of minimum wages–a clarification”, BGMEA President Faruque Hassan said that as per the new minimum monthly wage of Tk 12,500, basic has been set at Tk 6,700. That means per hour overtime rate is Tk 64.42.If a worker does 52 hours overtime in a month, he/she will get Tk 3,350 monthly. Besides, he/she will get at least Tk 300 as attendance bonus, though most of the factories are offering Tk 500 to Tk 1,000 as attendance bonus. “At the end of the month, an entry level worker will get at least Tk 16,150 as gross salary. However, overtime is allowed up to maximum four hours per day, and at the end of the month, it will reach 104 hours. In that case, a helper [entry level worker] will get Tk 6,700 as overtime and his/her gross salary will stand at Tk 19,500,” Faruque told The Business Post.

BGMEA demands price increase from buyers Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association has urged the US clothing retailers and brands to pay higher prices from December 1 as the owners are set to pay higher wages as fixed by the government to workers. BGMEA President Faruque Hassan made the request in a recent letter to Stephen Lamar, president and chief executive officer of the American Apparel & Footwear Association.In the letter, Faruque said, ‘Ensuring decent living of the workers is also a top priority for us as well as for global brands and retailers,’ Faruque went on saying, ‘Since we’ve accepted the new minimum wage, we will ensure its implementation. We need your support in terms of responsible purchasing practice.’

BGMEA's claim refuted by unions, economist The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has said the take-home salary of a worker will be higher than the new minimum wage if other allowances are considered, a claim that was refuted by two union leaders and an economist. The Minimum Wage Board has set the monthly pay at Tk 12,500, up 56 percent from the Tk 8,000 set in 2018. In a clarification yesterday, the BGMEA said an unskilled worker who joins a factory in the grade 5 on December 1 will be entitled to Tk 12,500 in gross monthly minimum wage.

Majority of the RMG factories in Konabari, Kashimpur reopens The majority of the readymade garment (RMG) manufacturing units of Gazipur’s Konabari and Kashimpur areas resumed operations as the workers of these areas wanted to join production procedures peacefully.However, still three garment factories in the area are closed and production activities in the other factories are going on normally. The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) revealed it in a statement regarding the labour situation in the RMG sector.

যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের ক্রেতাদের সহযোগিতা চেয়ে বিজিএমইএর চিঠি : নতুন মজুরির আলোকে দর সমন্বয় চান রপ্তানিকারকরা তৈরি পোশাক শ্রমিকদের নতুন ন্যূনতম মজুরি বাস্তবায়নে ক্রেতাদের সহযোগিতা চেয়েছে এ খাতের রপ্তানিকারক উদ্যোক্তাদের সংগঠন বিজিএমইএ। পোশাকের ন্যায্য দর নিশ্চিত করার অনুরোধ জানিয়ে আমেরিকান অ্যাপারেল অ্যান্ড ফুটওয়্যার অ্যাসোসিয়েশনকে (এএএফএ) চিঠি দেওয়া হয়েছে। গত ৮ নভেম্বর এএএফএর সভাপতি স্টিভেন ল্যামারের কাছে পাঠানো চিঠিতে বিজিএমইএর সভাপতি ফারুক হাসান বলেন, বাংলাদেশে তৈরি পোশাক খাতের শ্রমিকদের ন্যূনতম মজুরি বাড়ানোর সিদ্ধান্ত হয়েছে। আগামী ১ ডিসেম্বর থেকে যেসব পণ্য জাহাজীকরণ করা হবে, নতুন মজুরির আলোকে তার মূল্য সমন্বয় করা প্রয়োজন। এ ছাড়া নতুন করে যত ক্রয় চুক্তি হবে, তা নতুন ন্যূনতম মজুরির কাঠামো বিবেচনায় রেখেই করতে হবে। তারা আশা করছেন, ক্রেতারা বাংলাদেশ থেকে পণ্য ক্রয়ের ক্ষেত্রে দায়িত্বশীলতার পরিচয় দেবে।

‘Outsiders’ spark unrest in RMG sector BGMEA President Faruque Hasan told the Daily Messenger, “There has been a stable and peaceful environment in the garment industry for the past 5 years. That's why we are receiving praise internationally. However, there are many who are not happy with our progress; they want to disrupt this peaceful situation in any way." The BGMEA president mentioned that despite the increase in wages, factories were vandalised in various places in the name of agitation. In several factories, some unidentified agitated workers went on an illegal strike and beat up the officials. Extensive vandalism and destruction were carried out inside the factory.“It is very sad that when we are struggling to survive under the twin pressures of 'global and financial', the industry is being subjected to various activities. Especially our peaceful labour groups are being incited by vested interests,” he added.
