Kurdistan-Bangladesh Business Council chief meets BGMEA President to discuss business potential Having secured a solid standing in the world, Bangladesh considers diversifying markets as a key strategy for its apparel industry to pursue sustainable growth. The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has actively been engaged in exploring new yet promising markets under its apparel diplomacy initiative. Under this initiative, the BGMEA delegations have paid visits to potential apparel export destinations, including Australia, South Korea, India, China, and most recently, Iraq.The meeting was also attended by S. M. Mannan (Kochi), Senior Vice President of BGMEA, Mohammed Shohel, Managing Director, Bangla Poshak Ltd, and Dibrin Abdulaziz Omar, a businessman from Iraq.

How recycling RMG waste can cut 15% in cotton imports – and earn billions Shahidullah Azim, vice president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), said, "The industry could potentially export an additional $5 to $6 billion worth of garments by locally recycling around 4 lakh tonnes of garment waste." At present, the country generates a mere $300 million to $400 million from exporting a portion of garment waste, with a significant amount ending up in landfills or being burned, posing environmental hazards, Shahidullah Azim noted. BGMEA President Faruque Hassan said the government should offer policy and tax support to encourage recycling. "When these wastes go to the landfill or into the drains, the government does not get anything. But when we add value and transform a Tk10 waste into a Tk500 product, there is VAT. We have communicated this to the NBR several times, but no action has been taken," he said.

34 BGMEA Member Factories Enrolled In Mothers@Work Project The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and UNICEF jointly organised a seminar on the Mothers@Work project, an initiative aimed at promoting and upholding the maternity rights of women workers in the garment industry. The seminar, held on Wednesday at the BGMEA Complex, was attended by 73 mid-level management officials from 34 BGMEA member factories. Speaking at the event, Miran Ali, Vice President of the BGMEA, underscored the remarkable progress of Bangladesh’s apparel industry, particularly in ensuring workplace safety and advocating for workers’ rights and well-being. He stated that collaborating with UNICEF in implementing Mothers@Work reflects the industry’s commitment to enhancing workers’ overall well-being.

RMG 2023: A roller coaster of ups and downs Faruque Hassan, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), said that the sector faced multifaceted challenges in 2023. “The global economic slowdown caused by the Russia-Ukraine war became more visible this year. Interest rates have been raised in our destination countries, which affects their purchasing power. As a result, the order also decreases,” said BGMEA president Faruque Hassan. Due to all these reasons, the exports to major export destinations have fluctuated throughout 2023.“Consequently, Bangladesh faced a 15.87% decrease in EU’s import and 24.75% decrease in the US market. This pressure exerted a significant impact in the pricing dynamics of major clothing items, resulting in a notable 7%-9% decrease in our average unit prices,” said Mohiuddin Rubel, director of the BGMEA.

RMG sector struggles to bounce back after multiple setbacks “The crisis continues and the ongoing Palestine-Israel war fuels the crisis. Due to the war, freight cost has gone up, which will impact our business,” Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Faruque Hassan said. Businesses said that though they are continuing production with fewer orders than the capacity due to the order shortage, they failed to meet the shipment deadline due to gas shortage. However, they are receiving a good number of orders from non-traditional markets, which helps them to survive. BGMEA Director Mohiuddin Rubel said that the country failed to retain growth in the US, the single largest export destination, and earnings dropped by 9 per cent in the January-November period. “Besides, we achieved only 2.28 per cent export earnings growth in the European Union (EU). But the country posted 22.53 per cent growth in the non-traditional market which helped us retain the overall export growth so far this year.”

Bangladesh's RMG sector leads with 24 new LEED green factories in 2023 In 2023, Bangladesh's readymade garment (RMG) industry marked a significant stride in sustainable fashion, with 24 of its factories achieving LEED certification, reports UNB.This recent certification brings Bangladesh's total to 206 LEED-certified green factories, a testament to the country's dedication to green initiatives within the garments sector, according to BGMEA Director Mohiuddin Rubel. The BGMEA (Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association) reports a breakdown of these certifications, with 76 achieving the highest, platinum rating, and 116 receiving a gold rating.

তৈরি পোশাকের অপ্রচলিত বাজার : সর্বাধিক রফতানি প্রবৃদ্ধি তুরস্ক, চীন ও আরব আমিরাতে বিজিএমইএ সংকলিত রপ্তানি উন্নয়ন ব্যুরোর (ইপিবি) পরিসংখ্যানে এ তথ্য উঠে এসেছে। বিজিএমইএর পরিচালক ও ডেনিম এক্সপার্ট লিমিটেডের এএমডি মহিউদ্দিন রুবেল বলেন, ‘চলতি বছরের জানুয়ারি-নভেম্বর পর্যন্ত ইউরোপে আমাদের পোশাক রফতানি বেড়েছে ২ দশমিক ২৮ শতাংশ মাত্র, আর আমেরিকায় কমেছে ৯ শতাংশ। অর্থাৎ, সার্বিক মূল্যায়নে আমাদের প্রধান দুটি বাজারে রফতানি খুব একটা বাড়েনি। অপরদিকে অপ্রচলিত বাজারে রফতানি বেড়েছে ২২ দশমিক ৫৩ শতাংশ। অর্থাৎ, অপ্রচলিত বাজারে প্রবৃদ্ধির কল্যাণেই আমাদের সার্বিক রফতানিতে এখনো কিছুটা প্রবৃদ্ধি বজায় আছে।

সবুজ আন্দোলন : লিড সনদ পেয়েছে ২৪ পোশাক কারখানা দেশের পোশাক খাতের বড় দুর্ঘটনা রানা প্লাজা ধসের পর থেকে দেশে টেকসই পরিবেশবান্ধব কারখানার সংখ্যা বাড়ছে। ২০২৩ সালে এই পর্যন্ত ২৪টি কারখানা বিশ্বব্যাপী স্বীকৃত গ্রিন বিল্ডিং রেটিং সিস্টেম, লিডারশিপ ইন এনার্জি অ্যান্ড এনভায়রনমেন্টাল ডিজাইন (লিড) সনদ পেয়েছে। বর্তমানে মোট লিড কারখানার সংখ্য ২০৬টি। বৃহস্পতিবার তৈরি পোশাক প্রস্তুত ও রপ্তানিকারকদের সংগঠন বিজিএমইএ এই তথ্য জানিয়েছে। এই বিষয়ে বিজিএমইএর পরিচালক মহিউদ্দিন রুবেল বলেন, পোশাক খাতের পরিবেশবান্ধব মোট লিড সনদ পাওয়া সবুজ কারখানার সংখ্যা ২০৬টি। এর মধ্যে চলতি বছরেই পেয়েছে ২৪টি। যার মধ্যে ৭৬টি সর্বোচ্চ প্লাটিনাম রেটিং অর্জন করেছে এবং ১১৬টি সোনার রেটিং পেয়েছে। ২৪টি নতুন কারখানার মধ্যে বেশির ভাগ ১৬টি প্লাটিনাম মর্যাদাপূর্ণ।

Bangladesh to become 20th largest economy by 2038 Bangladesh is set to become the world's 20th largest economy by 2038 owing to continued economic growth, according to a forecast by the London-based Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) on Wednesday. The CEBR forecasts that annual gross domestic product (GDP) growth would accelerate to an average of 6.8 percent between 2023-24 and 2027-28, before slowing to an average of 6.2 percent per year over the subsequent decade. The next 15 years will see Bangladesh climb rapidly up the rankings of the World Economic League Table (WELT).The CEBR forecasts that Bangladesh will register a sizeable jump of 17 spots in the table by 2038, up from its current position in the 37th place. Bangladesh will climb three spots by next year and reach 23rd place by 2033, it added.

Now RMG exports incur a hit According to a news report published in this daily, as inflation surges in the United States and European Union (EU) countries, consumer behaviours pivot, leading to a noticeable decline in clothing sales. This shift has directly impacted the countrys export of ready-made garments, triggering a consistent decrease over the past 5 months. The repercussions are alarming, echoing concerns of an impending crisis that could cast a long shadow on the industry. Industry stakeholders, including the Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), voiced noticeable worries over dwindling purchase orders. Factory owners have also confirmed anxiety, articulating the severity of the situation.

১১ মাসে ৪২.৮৩ বিলিয়ন ডলারের পোশাক রপ্তানি চলতি বছরের প্রথম ১১ মাসে অর্থাৎ জানুয়ারি থেকে নভেম্বর সময়ে বাংলাদেশ থেকে ৪২ দশমিক ৮৩ বিলিয়ন ডলার মূল্যের পোশাক রপ্তানি হয়েছে। যা আগের বছরের তুলনায় ৪ দশমিক ৩৫ শতাংশ বেশি। বুধবার বাংলাদেশ পোশাক প্রস্তুতকারক ও রপ্তানিকারক সমিতির (বিজিএমইএ) পরিচালক মহিউদ্দিন রুবেলের স্বাক্ষর করা বিজ্ঞতিতে এ তথ্য জানানো হয়েছে। তবে বৈশ্বিকভাবে ২০২৩ সালটি পোশাক খাতের জন্য ২০২২ সালের মতো অতটা ভালো ছিল না বলেও উল্লেখ করেন তিনি। বিশ্ব বাণিজ্য সংস্থার তথ্যের বরাতে বিজ্ঞপ্তিতে বলা হয়েছে, ২০২২ সালের ৫৭৬ বিলিয়ন ডলার মূল্যের তৈরি পোশাক বিশ্ববাজারে রপ্তানি হয়েছে। তবে সেই প্রবণতা ২০২৩ সালে কিছুটা কমার আশঙ্কা রয়েছে।

১৫ দিনে রিজার্ভ বাড়ল দুই বিলিয়ন ডলার ডলার সংকটের কারণে এলসি খুলতে পারছে না অনেক ব্যাংক। এর মধ্যে আইএমএফের লক্ষ্যমাত্রা অনুযায়ী রিজার্ভ সংরক্ষণের লক্ষ্যে বিভিন্ন ব্যাংক থেকে ডলার কিনেছে কেন্দ্রীয় ব্যাংক। শুধু গত দুই দিনে কেনা হয়েছে ৪৫ কোটি ডলার। চলতি অর্থবছরের এ পর্যন্ত কেনা হয়েছে ১০৪ কোটি ডলার। পাশাপাশি কিছু বৈদেশিক ঋণ যোগ হওয়ার ফলে ১৫ দিনে দুই বিলিয়ন ডলারের বেশি বেড়ে গতকাল দিনের শুরুতে আইএমএফের পদ্ধতির হিসাবে মোট রিজার্ভ দাঁড়ায় ২১ দশমিক ৬৮ বিলিয়ন ডলার। আইএমএফের সংশোধিত লক্ষ্যমাত্রা অনুযায়ী ডিসেম্বর শেষে নিট রিজার্ভ রাখতে হবে ১৭ দশমিক ৭৮ বিলিয়ন ডলার। নিট রিজার্ভ শেষ পর্যন্ত কত হয়েছে, তার চূড়ান্ত পরিসংখ্যান অবশ্যজানা যায়নি।
