মার্কিন বাজারে পোশাকের জিএসপি পূনর্বহাল চাইলেন শিল্প মালিকরা যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে অগ্রাধিকার বাজার সুবিধা- জিএসপিসহ একই সুবিধায় তৈরি পোশাক খাতকে অন্তর্ভূক্ত করার আহবান জানিয়েছে তৈরি পোশাক প্রস্তুত ও রফতানিকারকদের সংগঠন বিজিএমইএ। এ ছাড়া তারা তৈরি পোশাক খাতের নায্য মূল্য নিশ্চিত করার তাগিদ দেন তারা। সোমবার (২২ এপ্রিল) ঢাকায় উত্তরাস্থ বিজিএমইএ কমপ্লেক্সে ইউএস ট্রেড রিপ্রেজেন্টেটিভ (ইউএসটিআর) এর দক্ষিণ ও সেন্ট্রাল এশিয়া অঞ্চলের সফররত প্রতিনিধদল এবং বিজিএমইএ’র মধ্যে অনুষ্ঠিত বৈঠকে এ আহবান জানান বিজিএমইএ নেতারা। বিজিএমইএ সভাপতি এস এম মান্নান (কচি) নেতৃত্বে অনুষ্ঠিত বৈঠকে আরও অংশগ্রহণ করেন বিজিএমইএ এর জ্যেষ্ঠ সহ-সভাপতি খন্দকার রফিকুল ইসলাম, সহ-সভাপতি (অর্থ) মো. নাসির উদ্দিন এবং সহ-সভাপতি আবদুল্লাহ হিল রাকিব। বৈঠকে আরও উপস্থিত ছিলেন বিজিএমইএ এর পরিচালক আসিফ আশরাফ, পরিচালক শোভন ইসলাম, পরিচালক মোহাম্মদ সোহেল সাদাত, পরিচালক মো. আশিকুর রহমান (তুহিন), পরিচালক শামস মাহমুদ, পরিচালক নুসরাত বারী আশা এবং বিজিএমইএ এর আইএলও ও শ্রম সংক্রান্ত স্ট্যান্ডিং কমিটির চেয়ারম্যান আ ন ম সাইফুদ্দিন।

BGMEA seeks support of US government to ensure fair minimum apparel price BGMEA has sought the support and collaboration of the US government to ensure fair minimum price of apparel and a unified code of conduct for social audits. The BGMEA also demanded of the US government to reinstate GSP in favour of Bangladesh and include garment items in its GSP programme. BGMEA president SM Mannan (Kochi) raised the demands at a meeting between the visiting delegation of the US Trade Representative (USTR) and the BGMEA held at the BGMEA Complex in Dhaka on Monday.This high-level engagement aimed to discuss critical issues surrounding bilateral trade and policies including workers' rights, well-being and market access matters. Led by Brendan Lynch, Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asia, the USTR delegation also comprised Emily Ashby, USTR Director for South and Central Asia, and Jennifer Oetken, USTR Director for Labor Affairs. Joseph Giblin, Economic Unit Chief, and Leena Khan, Labor Attache in the US Embassy in Dhaka were also present in the meeting, BSS reported citing a press release. The BGMEA side was headed by its President SM Mannan (Kochi) and included Senior Vice President Khandoker Rafiqul Islam, Vice President (Finance) Md Nasir Uddin, and Vice President Abdullah Hil Rakib. Directors of BGMEA Asif Ashraf, Shovon Islam, Mohammad Sohel Sadat, Md Ashikur Rahman (Tuhin), Shams Mahmud, Nusrat Bari Asha, and Chair of BGMEA Standing Committee on ILO and Labour Affairs ANM Saifuddin were also present.

BGMEA again seeks duty-free garment exports to US market The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has again urged the US government to allow duty-free access for garment items made from imported American cotton by reinstating its Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) facility. Leaders of the trade body made this demand at a meeting with senior officials of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) at the BGMEA office in Dhaka yesterday. Brendan Lynch, assistant USTR for South and Central Asia, led the American delegation while SM Mannan Kochi, president of the BGMEA, led the Bangladeshi delegation.At the meeting, the BGMEA also urged the USTR to put pressure on US clothing retailers and brands to increase the per unit price paid for garment items sourced from Bangladesh. Additionally, Kochi suggested introducing a unified code of conduct for all local brands and suppliers of the US market.

ট্রেড ইউনিয়ন করা যাবে যে কোনো কারখানায় : মার্কিন প্রতিনিধি দলকে আইনমন্ত্রী দেশের যে কোনো কারখানায় ট্রেড ইউনিয়ন গঠন করার সুযোগ রেখে শ্রম আইন সংশোধন করা হবে বলে জানিয়েছেন আইনমন্ত্রী আনিসুল হক। সোমবার সচিবালয়ে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের বাণিজ্য প্রতিনিধি দলের সঙ্গে বৈঠকের পর সাংবাদিকদের এ তথ্য জানান তিনি। সফররত প্রতিনিধি দলের সঙ্গে বৈঠকে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের বাজারে বাংলাদেশের পণ্য রপ্তানিতে শুল্কমুক্ত সুবিধা বা জিএসপি পুনর্বহাল এবং তৈরি পোশাককে অন্তর্ভুক্ত করার অনুরোধ জানিয়েছে বিজিএমইএ। পোশাকের ন্যূনতম ন্যায্য মূল্য নির্ধারণেও মার্কিন ব্র্যান্ড এবং ক্রেতা প্রতিষ্ঠানকে সম্মত করাতেও অনুরোধ জানানো হয়েছে। বিজিএমএইএর সভাপতি এস এম মান্নান কচি এ অনুরোধ জানান। বিজিএমইএর অনুরোধের পরিপ্রেক্ষিতে মার্কিন কর্মকর্তারা ইতিবাচক মনোভাব দেখিয়েছেন। নতুন জিএসপির তালিকায় বাংলাদেশের নাম অন্তর্ভুক্ত করার বিষয়টি ক্যাপিটাল হিলের বিবেচনায় রয়েছে বলে জানান তারা।গতকাল রাজধানীর উত্তরায় বিজিএমইএ ভবনে অনুষ্ঠিত বৈঠকে বিজিএমইএর পক্ষে আলোচনায় আরও অংশ নেন সংগঠনের সিনিয়র সহসভাপতি খন্দকার রফিকুল ইসলাম, সহসভাপতি নাসির উদ্দিন এবং আবদুল্লাহ হিল রাকিবসহ অন্যান্য পরিচালক।

Resolving Bangladesh GSP+ issue a vested EU interest Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Bangladesh Charles Whiteley has assured that they will not introduce any policy that may deprive Bangladesh from duty-free market access in the region. Whiteley made the remarks on Monday during his visit to The Business Post and Dainik Amader Shomoy offices in Dhaka, adding, “We need your [Bangladesh’s] good value garments. I believe we will have to run around naked if the Bangladesh market collapses. “So we have a vested interest in solving the GSP issue, and I am confident we will resolve it.” First Secretary (political) of the Delegation of the EU accompanied Whiteley in the programme. The EU is Bangladesh’s single largest export region, occupying nearly 45 per cent of the country’s total exports. In FY23, Bangladesh earned $25.24 billion from the EU, while the country’s total exports stood at $55.56 billion, according to the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB).
