BGMEA board for propelling garments industry to new heights Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) president S.M. Mannan Kochi said the industry is committed to achieving the goal of $100 billion in garments exports by 2030. He said that every citizen of the country will get a better life, everyone will enjoy the benefits of freedom – the BGMEA board is working with this conviction. The observations were made when the BGMEA board led by president S.M. Mannan (Kochi) paid homage to the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at his mausoleum in Tungipara, Gopalganj on May 4. জাতির পিতার সমাধিতে বিজিএমইএ’র নেতাদের শ্রদ্ধা গোপালগঞ্জের টুঙ্গিপাড়ায় জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের সমাধিতে শ্রদ্ধা জানিয়েছেন তৈরি পোশাক শিল্প মালিকদের সংগঠন বিজিএমইএ-এর নবনির্বাচিত কমিটির নেতারা। শনিবার দুপুরে নবনির্বাচিত সভাপতি এসএম মান্নান কচির নেতৃত্বে কমিটির সদস্যরা সমাধিসৌধের বেদিতে পুষ্পস্তবক অর্পণ করেন। এ সময় নেতারা বেদির পাশে কিছুক্ষণ নীরবে দাঁড়িয়ে থেকে জাতির পিতার প্রতি গভীর সম্মান প্রদর্শন করেন। নবনির্বাচিত কমিটির নেতারা এ সময় সুরা ফাতেহা পাঠ করেন এবং বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানসহ ১৫ আগস্টে নিহত ও মহান মুক্তিযুদ্ধের ৩০ লাখ শহিদের রুহের মাগফিরাত কামনায় দোয়া ও মোনাজাতে অংশ নেন। বিজিএমইএ-এর সাবেক সভাপতি ও বাংলাদেশ আওয়ামী লীগের শিল্প বাণিজ্যবিষয়ক সম্পাদক সিদ্দিকুর রহমান, ঢাকা উত্তর আওয়ামী লীগের শিল্প বাণিজ্যবিষয়ক সম্পাদক ও ঢাকা ১৮ আসনের সংসদ-সদস্য খসরু চৌধুরী, সিনিয়র সহসভাপতি খন্দকার রফিকুল ইসলাম, সহসভাপতি আব্দুল্লাহ হিল রাকিব, এমডি নাসির উদ্দিন, টুঙ্গিপাড়া পৌর মেয়র শেখ তোজাম্মেল হক টুটুল প্রমুখ উপস্থিত ছিলেন।

BGMEA wants alternative support after Bangladesh's LDC graduation BGMEA is expected to meet the exporting target of $100 billion in the garment sector by 2030, its President SM Mannan (Kochi) said today (4 May). RMG export to US down 17pc in January-March Bangladesh's garment exports to the US, the country's largest export destination, fell by over 17 per cent year-on-year to $1.75 billion in January-March, according to the Office of Textiles and Apparel (OTEXA), a body under the American Commerce Department. SM Mannan Kochi, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), said price is the key factor. "Buyers are offering lower rates while production costs are steadily increasing," commented Mr Kochi, calling for measures to reduce costs and ensure fair apparel pricing to remain competitive. Abdullah Hil Rakib, managing director of Team Group and also BGMEA vice president, attributed the decline to the Red Sea crisis.

Why Bangladeshi exporters increasingly choosing Delhi for air shipments Ashikur Rahman Tuhin, a director of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), told TBS, "This season witnessed limited order bookings initially, with buyers exercising caution following last year's sales performance. However, upon positive feedback from consumers, apparel buyers began to ramp up their orders with shorter lead times. Hence, these goods had to be exported via airfreight, incurring additional costs to meet the lead time requirements." In some cases, apparel manufacturers opt for air shipments due to their own delays. Nevertheless, airfreight rates in Dhaka have surged from $2.4 per kilogram for EU routes to $5-$5.5 per kilogram, said Tuhin, who also serves as the managing director at TAD Group. Echoing Tuhin's sentiments, Shovon Islam, managing director of Sparrow Group, said Delhi Airport currently provides more cost-effective rates than Dhaka Airport for both air cargo and passenger flights. "The airfreight cost from Dhaka to New Jersey stands at $6 per kilogram, while it is only $4 from Delhi airport. Similarly, the airfreight cost from Dhaka to New York is $8 per kilogram, whereas it is only $5 from Delhi airport. Additionally, the airfreight cost from Dhaka to Madrid or London is $5.5 per kilogram, compared to only $4 from Delhi airport," he said.

তিন মাস অন্তর বিদ্যুতের মূল্যবৃদ্ধির সিদ্ধান্তে উদ্বিগ্ন উদ্যোক্তারা ভর্তুকি কমাতে বছরে চারবার বিদ্যুতের মূল্য সমন্বয় করবে বিদ্যুৎ বিভাগ। আগামী তিন বছর এই প্রক্রিয়ায় বিদ্যুৎ খাতে দেওয়া ভর্তুকি কমিয়ে আনতে চায় তারা। সরকার বিদ্যুৎ খাতে ভর্তুকি দিয়ে আসছে, সুতরাং এ খাতে ভর্তুকি কমানো হলে বিদ্যুতের দাম বাড়বে। তবে তিন মাস অন্তর বিদ্যুতের মূল্যবৃদ্ধির পরিকল্পনায় উদ্বেগ প্রকাশ করেছেন বিভিন্ন খাতের শিল্পকারখানার উদ্যোক্তারা। কয়েকজন উদ্যোক্তা বলেছেন, করোনার পর রাশিয়া-ইউক্রেন যুদ্ধ ও মধ্যপ্রাচ্যে হামাস–ইসরায়েল সংঘাতের কারণে বিশ্ব অর্থনীতি অস্থিরতার মধ্য দিয়ে যাচ্ছে। অন্যদিকে দেশে ডলারের উচ্চমূল্য এবং বাড়তি দাম দিয়েও নিরবচ্ছিন্নভাবে গ্যাস ও বিদ্যুৎ না পাওয়ায় ব্যবসার খরচ বেড়ে গেছে। ব্যাংক ঋণের সুদের হারও বেড়েছে। নতুন করে আবার বিদ্যুতের দাম বাড়লে ব্যবসার খরচ আরও বেড়ে যাবে। প্রতিযোগিতা সক্ষমতাও কমে আসবে দেশীয় কোম্পানিগুলোর। তাতে আমদানি বৃদ্ধি ও রপ্তানি কমে যাওয়ার শঙ্কা রয়েছে।
