Meeting $100b garment export target by 2030 tough, but feasible :Say manufacturers, business leaders To meet the target, readymade garment exporters seek government policy support, a stable political environment and overall security for their production units. "Buyers are returning to Bangladesh. Therefore, achieving the target is possible if the government can improve gas and power supply," said Faruque Hassan, former president of BGMEA. During his tenure at the BGMEA, Hassan set the export target in 2022. To achieve this goal, the BGMEA then identified adequate gas and power supply, new investment, product and market diversification and investment in man-made fibre products as crucial factors. Khandoker Rafiqul Islam, president of the now-dissolved board of directors of BGMEA, also sounded confident in achieving the $100 billion garment export target by 2030, provided all necessary facilities are in place.

BGMEA forms 10-member supporting committee to assist administrator The supporting committee was announced as per Section 18 (2) of the Trade Organization Act, 2022, said a notice issued by BGMEA Administrator Md Anwar Hossain today (24 October). টার্গেট শত বিলিয়ন বাংলাদেশ গার্মেন্টস ম্যানুফ্যাকচারার্স অ্যান্ড এক্সপোর্টার্স অ্যাসোসিয়েশন-বিজিএমইএর সাবেক সভাপতি খন্দকার রফিকুল ইসলাম বলেছেন, পোশাক শিল্প একটি চ্যালেঞ্জিং সময় পার করে বর্তমানে স্থিতিশীলতা অর্জন করেছে। সরকার, মালিক, শ্রমিক, বাংলাদেশ সেনাবাহিনী ও আইনশৃঙ্খলা বাহিনীসহ সবার সহযোগিতায় বিজিএমইএর সদ্য বিদায়ী বোর্ড বিপর্যয়কর পরিস্থিতি মোকাবিলা করতে সক্ষম হয়েছে। তিনি বলেন, ক্রেতারাও বাংলাদেশের পোশাক শিল্পের ওপর আস্থা রাখছেন। খন্দকার রফিকুল ইসলাম বলেন, গত অর্থবছরে পোশাক রফতানি বেড়েছিল ৩৫ শতাংশ। গত কিছু দিন এই শিল্পে কিছুটা সংকট ছিল, যা ইতোমধ্যে কাটিয়ে স্থিতিশীল ধারায় ফিরেছে। একই সঙ্গে চীন থেকে গত কয়েক বছরে অনেক ক্রয়াদেশ বাংলাদেশে এসেছে। ২০৩০ সাল থেকে আরো ছয় বছর এই পরিমাণ আরো বাড়বে। চীন যেহেতু পরিবেশগত কারণে টেক্সটাইল থেকে সরে আসছে, ফলে সঙ্গত কারণেই সেগুলো বাংলাদেশে আসবে। আমরা এই সুযোগগুলো গ্রহণ করতে চাই।

RMG units struggle to adopt global reporting standards Local garment factories are struggling to implement the Global Reporting Initiatives (GRI) standards, a set of 246 globally accepted standard issues, owing to a raft of factors, including a lack of data, local expertise, national policy directives and incentives, according to a keynote paper presented.The GRI standards represent global best practices for reporting publicly on a range of environmental, social and governance (ESG) impacts.

Manufacturing shrinks by 9.75pc YoY in June: BBS Large-scale manufacturing in Bangladesh contracted by 9.75 per cent year on year in June, according to the latest data available with the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics.This decline marks the first negative growth in months following a positive growth rate of 9.56 per cent in May 2024. This is significant enough to have implications on GDP (gross domestic product). The quantum index for large-scale manufacturing (LSM) was 209.69 points in June compared to 194.52 points in the corresponding month last year. Fourteen out of 24 sectors reported negative growth in June 2024.

বাড়ছে সুদের হার, চাপে ব্যবসায়ীরা উচ্চ মূল্যস্ফীতি নিয়ন্ত্রণে আবারও নীতি সুদহার বাড়িয়েছে কেন্দ্রীয় সরকার। এতে ব্যাংকঋণের সুদহারও পাল্লা দিয়ে বাড়ছে। সুদ বেড়ে যাওয়ায় ব্যাংকঋণের ওপর নির্ভরশীল ছোট, মাঝারি ও বড় ব্যবসায়ীদের কপালে দুশ্চিন্তার ছাপ পড়ছে। ব্যবসায়ীরা বলছেন, দেশে চলমান অস্থিরতায় অত্যাবশ্যকীয় নিত্যপণ্য নয়—এমন পণ্যের চাহিদা কমে গেছে। তাতে অধিকাংশ প্রতিষ্ঠানের বিক্রিতে ধস নেমেছে। এমন পরিস্থিতিতে ঋণের সুদহার বেড়ে যাওয়ায় বাড়তি চাপ তৈরি হয়েছে। সুদহার অত্যধিক বেড়ে যাওয়ায় ব্যবসা সম্প্রসারণ ও নতুন বিনিয়োগের পরিকল্পনা আপাতত তুলে রাখছেন অনেক উদ্যোক্তা। শুধু সুদহার বাড়িয়ে মূল্যস্ফীতি নিয়ন্ত্রণের কৌশলের যৌক্তিকতা নিয়েও কেউ কেউ প্রশ্ন তুলেছেন।

RMG industrial hubs normal with some sporadic incidents Manufacturers of readymade garments (RMG) said that operations at their factories at major industrial hubs like Savar, Ashulia, Gazipur, and the capital were normal despite some sporadic incidents.There were some minor isolated incidents reported at Ashulia and Savar, but the incidents were related to two or three specific factories, they also said.
