এলডিসি থেকে উত্তরণ : ব্যবসায়ীদের উদ্বেগ জাতিসংঘে জানিয়েছে সরকার দেশের বর্তমান অর্থনৈতিক পরিস্থিতিতে বাংলাদেশ আগামী বছর স্বল্পোন্নত দেশের (এলডিসি) তালিকা থেকে বের হলে সংকট তৈরি হবে। এমন উদ্বেগ জানিয়ে এলডিসি থেকে উত্তরণ ২০২৬ সাল থেকে পিছিয়ে ২০৩২ সালে নির্ধারণের দাবি করে সরকারের কাছে সম্প্রতি চিঠি দেয় শীর্ষস্থানীয় বাণিজ্য সংগঠনগুলো। ব্যবসায়ীদের এ উদ্বেগ জাতিসংঘকে জানিয়েছে সরকার। তৈরি পোশাক শিল্পের মালিকদের সংগঠন বিজিএমইএর সভাপতি মাহমুদ হাসান খান (বাবু) সমকালকে বলেন, ‘এলডিসি উত্তরণ সফল ও টেকসই করতে প্রস্তুতির জন্য বাড়তি সময় প্রয়োজন। আমরা চাই ২০২৯ সালে উত্তরণের সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া হোক। পরবর্তী তিন বছর হোক রূপান্তরের সময়। সব মিলিয়ে আমরা ছয় বছর পেছানোর কথা বলছি।’ বিজিএমইএ সভাপতি জাতিসংঘের স্বাধীন মূল্যায়নের উদ্যোগকে স্বাগত জানিয়ে বলেন, এটি খুবই ইতিবাচক দিক। কারণ এলডিসি থেকে উত্তরণের মতো বড় সিদ্ধান্ত সব পক্ষের সঙ্গে আলোচনা করেই নেওয়া যৌক্তিক। ব্যবসায়ীদের সঙ্গে জাতিসংঘের প্রতিনিধিরা আলোচনায় বসলে তারা তাদের উদ্বেগের দিকগুলো তুলে ধরবেন।

BGMEA briefs IMF on RMG risks, urges govt to prioritize FTAs to counter LDC graduation challenge A delegation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) met with the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) on Wednesday to discuss the current state and future risks of the country's ready-made garment (RMG) sector, aiming to ensure macroeconomic stability. The meeting took place at the BGMEA office in Uttara and was attended by BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan, Senior Vice President Enamul Haque Khan, Vice Presidents Md. Rezwan Selim and Vidya Amrit Khan, and other directors. The IMF delegation included Senior Economist Qiaoe Chen, Senior Economist Ruifeng Zhang, and Economist Ayah Said.

BGMEA urges govt to sign trade deals with major partners Garment manufacturers have urged the government to pursue free trade agreements and economic partnership agreements with the European Union, the UK, Japan, and Canada alongside other potential trading partners. The deals are required for retaining preferential trade benefits once Bangladesh attains the status graduation from a least developed country (LDC) to a developing one in November 2026, said the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA). The BGMEA leaders said this in response to queries from a visiting delegation of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) during a meeting at the BGMEA office in Dhaka yesterday.The IMF delegation met with BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan to discuss Bangladesh's preparedness for LDC graduation and other economic issues.

The meeting also talked about ways to keep growing despite changes in the global economy, how US tariff policies might affect ready-made garment exports, what Bangladesh›s upcoming move away from LDC status could mean, the shift towards more valuable products, and the overall effects of global economic uncertainty.According to a press release, a delegation from the IMF met with the BGMEA›s leaders at its office in the capital’s Uttara. BGMEA president Mahmud Hasan Khan Babu led the BGMEA team, which included its vice presidents and directors, while the IMF delegation included senior economists Qiaoe Chen and Ruifeng Zhang, and economist Ayah Said.

‘রাজনৈতিক অস্থিরতায় থমকে গেছে ডেনিম শিল্প, আছে মন্দার চাপও’ বাংলাদেশসহ বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন অঞ্চলের রাজনৈতিক অস্থিরতা ও অর্থনৈতিক অনিশ্চয়তার কারণে ডেনিম ও পোশাকশিল্প বর্তমানে মন্দার চাপের মধ্যে রয়েছে বলে জানিয়েছেন শিল্প সংশ্লিষ্টরা। তারা বলছেন, এ খাতের সম্প্রসারণ কার্যত থমকে গেছে। দেশের ডেনিম শিল্পের বিকাশে নিবেদিত বৃহত্তম আন্তর্জাতিক প্রদর্শনী বাংলাদেশ ডেনিম এক্সপোর ১৯তম আসর শুরু হয়েছে আজ বুধবার। রাজধানীর ইন্টারন্যাশনাল কনভেনশন সিটি বসুন্ধরায় (আইসিসিবি) দুদিনব্যাপী এ আয়োজন শেষ হবে বৃহস্পতিবার।
