BGMEA hails Foreign Minister on election as President of 81st UNGA session The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has extended heartfelt congratulations to Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman on his election as President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), describing the achievement as a landmark recognition of Bangladesh's diplomatic strength and global standing. In a press release issued here today, the body of the country's apparel sector said Dr. Khalilur Rahman's election has elevated Bangladesh's image in the international arena and reflected the country's diplomatic foresight and strong position on the global stage.

প্রাক্‌-বাজেট আলোচনায় অর্থমন্ত্রী : যেকোনো পণ্য রপ্তানিতে বন্ডেড ওয়্যারহাউস সুবিধা দেওয়া হবে তৈরি পোশাকের পাশাপাশি বাংলাদেশ থেকে রপ্তানি হওয়া যেকোনো পণ্যের ক্ষেত্রেই বন্ডেড ওয়্যারহাউস (শুল্কমুক্ত গুদাম) সুবিধা দেওয়া হবে বলে জানিয়েছেন অর্থ ও পরিকল্পনামন্ত্রী আমির খসরু মাহমুদ চৌধুরী। একই সঙ্গে বন্ড সুবিধা পাওয়া ব্যবসায়ীদের হয়রানি বন্ধ এবং প্রশাসনিক জটিলতা কমানোরও ঘোষণা দেন তিনি। বুধবার সন্ধ্যায় রাজধানীর বনানীর একটি হোটেলে ঢাকা ফোরাম ইনিশিয়েটিভ (ডিএফআই) আয়োজিত এক প্রাক্‌-বাজেট আলোচনায় প্রধান অতিথির বক্তব্যে এ ঘোষণা দেন অর্থমন্ত্রী। অনন্ত গ্রুপের ব্যবস্থাপনা পরিচালক (এমডি) শরীফ জহির বলেন, সুতি পণ্যে দীর্ঘদিন ধরে দেওয়া নগদ প্রণোদনার নীতি পুনর্বিবেচনার সময় এসেছে। পোশাক খাতের টেকসই প্রবৃদ্ধির জন্য কৃত্রিম বা ম্যান-মেড ফাইবারে বিশেষ প্রণোদনা এবং বন্ড লাইসেন্স প্রাপ্তির প্রক্রিয়া দুর্নীতিমুক্ত ও সহজ করা প্রয়োজন।

আবার মার্কিন শুল্কের ভয় জোরপূর্বক শ্রম কমিয়ে আনার লক্ষ্যমাত্রা পূরণে ব্যর্থ হওয়ায় বাংলাদেশসহ ৬০টি দেশের ওপর আবার অতিরিক্ত শুল্ক আরোপের প্রস্তাব দিয়েছে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের প্রেসিডেন্ট ডোনাল্ড ট্রাম্পের প্রশাসন। এর মধ্যে বাংলাদেশসহ ১৫টি দেশের ওপর ১০ শতাংশ এবং বাকি ৪৫টি দেশের ওপর সাড়ে ১২ শতাংশ হারে শুল্ক বসানোর কথা বলা হয়েছে। বাংলাদেশের বিরুদ্ধে যদি কোনো নির্দিষ্ট অভিযোগ বা তথ্য থাকে, তাহলে সেটি প্রকাশ করা উচিত বলে জানান বিকেএমইএর সভাপতি। তিনি বলেন, অন্যথায় এমন অভিযোগ আন্তর্জাতিক অঙ্গনে দেশের ভাবমূর্তি ক্ষুণ্ন করতে পারে। তবে এ বিষয়ে আতঙ্কিত হওয়ার কারণ নেই। দেশের স্বার্থে সরকার, বিকেএমইএ, বিজিএমইএ এবং বেসরকারি খাত একযোগে বিষয়টি মোকাবিলা করবে। একই ধরনের অবস্থান নিয়েছে তৈরি পোশাকশিল্পের মালিকদের আরেক সংগঠন বিজিএমইএ। সংগঠনটির সভাপতি মাহমুদ হাসান খান বাবু বলেন, জোরপূর্বক শ্রমের অভিযোগের সঙ্গে বাংলাদেশের নাম যুক্ত হওয়া অত্যন্ত দুঃখজনক ও অনভিপ্রেত। বর্তমানে পরিবেশবান্ধব কারখানা, কর্মপরিবেশ ও নিরাপত্তা মানের ক্ষেত্রে বাংলাদেশ বিশ্বের অন্যতম অগ্রগামী অবস্থানে রয়েছে। ফলে এমন অভিযোগ বাস্তবতার সঙ্গে সামঞ্জস্যপূর্ণ নয়। মাহমুদ হাসান বলেন, বিষয়টির ওপর বিজিএমইএ নিবিড় নজর রাখছে। সরকারের সঙ্গে আলোচনা করে প্রয়োজনীয় পদক্ষেপ নেওয়া হবে। পাশাপাশি আন্তর্জাতিক ব্র্যান্ড ও ক্রেতা প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলোর সমর্থনও চাওয়া হবে, যাতে বাংলাদেশের শ্রমমান ও উৎপাদন বাস্তবতা যথাযথভাবে আন্তর্জাতিক মহলে তুলে ধরা যায়।

He also said that it might me be a mechanism to impose tariffs on the US trading partner as the universal 10 per cent tariff announced earlier to be expired on July 22. ‘We urge the government to appeal within the deadline, with proper documents showing that Bangladesh is free from forced labour,’ said Shovon Islam, managing director of Sparrow Group.

Bangladesh may face 10% more tariff on US exports The US has proposed fresh tariffs on 60 countries, including Bangladesh, because they have failed to prove they do not import industrial raw materials from places where forced labour is used. The USTR found that Bangladesh has failed to impose and effectively enforce a prohibition on the import of goods produced with forced labour, thereby burdening or restricting US commerce. Bangladesh does not import cotton from countries with enforced labour, said Faisal Samad, director of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA). The country has stopped importing cotton from China for many years, as the certificates of origin of raw materials provided to the buyers demonstrate, he said, adding that the BGMEA will sit with the US embassy soon and seek clarification on the issue.

US forced labour tariff move jolts exporters Exporters expressed bewilderment that Bangladesh had been included despite the recent signing of the US-Bangladesh Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART), under which Dhaka committed to establishing a mechanism allowing certain textile and apparel products to enter the US at zero reciprocal tariff. Shovon Islam, managing director of Sparrow Group and a former director of BGMEA, said the proposal was difficult to reconcile with the two countries’ ongoing engagement. BGMEA Director Faisal Samad said the association would be meeting USTR representatives in the coming week to discuss the agreement, US cotton use, and related matters. Mohiuddin Rubel, additional managing director of Denim Expert Ltd and another former BGMEA director, warned that until the bilateral agreement is implemented, pressure from Washington was unlikely to ease. “Bangladesh signed the agreement with the US. But now its development depends on government initiatives, as there are steps still to be taken,” he said.

Exports slip to red in May, fall 7.07pc Bangladesh's export earnings fell 7.07 per cent year-on-year in May to $4.40 billion, down from $4.74 billion in May 2025, slipping back into negative territory just a month after a brief rebound, mainly on the back of weaker readymade garment shipments. Exports had snapped an eight-month losing streak with positive growth in April, but nosedived again in May, according to data from the Export Promotion Bureau published on Wednesday. Mohiuddin Rubel, former director of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, said that global economic sluggishness, weaker demand, conflicts and domestic political tensions throughout the FY26 impacted the exports. ‘However, to stay competitive in such tense global markets, we must explore new markets, diversify products, invest in automation, design, and innovation,’ he added, urging proper governmental support.
