Why the June export rise isn’t assuring for the economy Bangladesh’s export books closed the FY26 with an unexpected 25.91% surge in June shipments. "Providing debt restructuring or credit support will not save our industries if the underlying energy to run the machinery is completely unavailable," warned Mahmud Hasan Khan, president of BGMEA. At the same time, factory owners are facing a steep rise in input costs that international fashion brands refuse to offset. The most telling sign of future trouble is the sharp decline in Utilization Declarations (UD)—the mandatory certificates required to import raw materials for upcoming export orders. This drop in forward-looking orders shows that while factories were busy shipping past backlogs in June, the pipeline for the coming months is shrinking significantly.

মুক্তবাণিজ্য অঞ্চল : দেশেই বিদেশি কাঁচামাল পাবে ছোট উদ্যোক্তারা নতুন এ বাণিজ্যকাঠামোর আওতায় মুক্তবাণিজ্য অঞ্চলের ব্যবসায়ীরা কোনো ধরনের শুল্ক পরিশোধ ছাড়াই কাঁচামাল, যন্ত্রাংশ ও পণ্য আমদানি করতে পারবেন। এসব অঞ্চলে পণ্য সংরক্ষণ, প্রক্রিয়াজাতকরণ, সংযোজন, পুনর্মোড়কীকরণ (রিপ্যাকেজিং), রিলেবেলিং ও পুনর্রপ্তানির সুযোগ থাকবে। প্রয়োজন হলে প্রযোজ্য শুল্ক ও কর পরিশোধের মাধ্যমে দেশি বাজারেও এসব পণ্য সরবরাহ করা যাবে। এতে যেসব ছোট প্রতিষ্ঠান দেশের ভেতর থেকেই এলসি ছাড়াই বিদেশি কাঁচামাল পাবে, আবার বড়দের ক্রয়াদেশ পেয়ে কাঁচামালের জন্য অপেক্ষা করতে হবে না। মুক্তবাণিজ্য অঞ্চলে থাকা কাঁচামাল দিয়ে পণ্য উৎপাদন শুরু করতে পারবে।

US shifting from aid to trade with Bangladesh Washington is seeking to move away from unilateral trade preferences and ineffective aid towards a fairer, more reciprocal economic relationship with Dhaka centred on trade, investment and long-term cooperation, US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent Christensen said yesterday. “As I’ve said before, America First does not mean America alone,” he said, adding that the US values partnerships that advance mutual interests and benefits. “We want a genuine partnership -- one that creates opportunities for Americans and Bangladeshis alike.”Bangladesh has the potential to become an increasingly important economic hub due to its dynamic private sector and young workforce, he said at an event marking 250 years of American independence, jointly organised by the US Embassy and the American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham) at Sheraton Dhaka.

Countries leave Bangladesh behind in GNI index Only a few years ago, the names of Bangladesh and Vietnam were uttered in the same breath during discussions on emerging economies in South and Southeast Asia. Driven by apparel exports, rapid economic growth, poverty reduction, and various developmental indicators, Bangladesh was widely spotlighted as a highly promising economy. In recent years, however, that narrative has begun to shift. Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, Mohiuddin Rubel, former director of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), noted that Vietnam’s elevation to an upper-middle-income country serves as a wake-up call for Bangladesh. It demonstrates that substantial economic progress is achievable in a relatively short timeframe through sustained economic reforms, export diversification, skilled human resources, infrastructure development, and an investor-friendly environment.

ভিয়েতনাম, শ্রীলঙ্কা, ফিলিপাইনসহ ৫ দেশ উচ্চমধ্যম আয়ের দেশ হলো কীভাবে চলতি বছরে পাঁচটি দেশ নিম্নমধ্যম আয়ের দেশ থেকে উচ্চমধ্যম আয়ের দেশে উন্নীত হয়েছে। দেশগুলো হলো শ্রীলঙ্কা, ভিয়েতনাম, ফিলিপাইন, জর্ডান ও মাইক্রোনেশিয়া। এ ছাড়া নিম্ন আয়ের দেশ থেকে নিম্নমধ্যম আয়ের দেশ হয়েছে আফ্রিকার টোগো। বিশ্বব্যাংকের সর্বশেষ মূল্যায়নে এসব দেশের উন্নতি হয়েছে। কোনো দেশই নিম্ন আয়ের শ্রেণিতে নামেনি। বাংলাদেশেরও অবস্থানের পরিবর্তন হয়নি। বাংলাদেশ এখনো নিম্নমধ্যম আয়ের দেশের তালিকায় আছে। বাংলাদেশ পরিসংখ্যান ব্যুরোর (বিবিএস) সর্বশেষ হিসাবে, বাংলাদেশের গড় মাথপিছু আয় এখন ৩ হাজার ২০ মার্কিন ডলার।

Experts say delivery is key Economists and business leaders have welcomed the government’s plan to overhaul business regulatory regime, saying the reforms could significantly improve the country’s investment climate ahead of its graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status – provided they are implemented effectively. প্রধান আন্তর্জাতিক বাজারে পোশাক রপ্তানি নিম্নমুখী বাংলাদেশের প্রধান রপ্তানি পণ্য তৈরি পোশাক। দেশের মোট রপ্তানি আয়ের ৮০ শতাংশের বেশি আসে এ খাত থেকে। ২০২৬ সালের শুরুর দিকে খাতটির প্রধান দুই রপ্তানি বাজার—ইউরোপীয় ইউনিয়ন (ইইউ) ও যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে পোশাক রপ্তানির গতি শ্লথ হতে দেখা গেছে। খাত-সংশ্লিষ্টদের মতে, টানা কয়েক মাসের দুর্বলতার পর ঘুরে দাঁড়ানোর যে আভাস দেখা গিয়েছিল, তা ধরে রাখা সম্ভব হচ্ছে না। বিশেষ করে ইইউ ও যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের মতো প্রধান বাজারে ক্রয়াদেশ কমে যাওয়ায় রপ্তানিকারকদের মধ্যে উদ্বেগ বাড়ছে। বাংলাদেশের মোট পণ্য রপ্তানি আয়ের প্রায় ৭০ শতাংশই নির্ভর করে যুক্তরাষ্ট্র ও ইউরোপীয় ইউনিয়নভুক্ত দেশগুলোর ওপর। তাই এসব প্রধান বাজারে চাহিদা হ্রাস পাওয়ায় দেশের রপ্তানি খাতের পাশাপাশি শিল্প উৎপাদন, কর্মসংস্থান এবং বৈদেশিক মুদ্রা অর্জনও চাপে পড়ার আশঙ্কা দেখা দিয়েছে বলে মনে করছেন শিল্প উদ্যোক্তা ও অর্থনীতিবিদরা।
