Bangladesh faces higher freight costs amid Mideast conflict Bangladesh’s export sector is facing sharply higher ocean freight rates, largely driven by an escalating conflict between Iran and the US-Israel coalition that has choked shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, according to industry insiders. Mahmud Hasan Khan, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), said most garment exporters are insulated from the immediate impact, since 90 to 95 percent of export orders are shipped on Free on Board (FOB) terms. “Under FOB contracts, exporters bear transportation costs only up to the port. Ocean freight, container charges and other international shipping costs are paid by overseas buyers,” he said. But he warned the effects would eventually reach exporters too. “When logistics costs increase, buyers usually reduce imports or place fewer orders,” he said.

CEPA with South Korea to be signed on Tuesday Bangladesh and South Korea are set to sign a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in Dhaka on Tuesday, as the country steps up efforts to secure duty-free market access ahead of its graduation from the least developed country club. “We are going to sign the trade agreement with Korea in Dhaka on August 4 [Tuesday],” Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdur Muktadir told The Daily Star without further elaboration.The agreement is expected to deepen bilateral trade, attract South Korean investment and expand cooperation in services between Dhaka and Seoul.

ইইউর ১৫ দেশে বাংলাদেশের পোশাক রপ্তানি কমেছে ইউরোপীয় ইউনিয়নে (ইইউ) তৈরি পোশাক রপ্তানি পরিস্থিতি ক্রমেই খারাপের দিকে যাচ্ছে। গত ২০২৫-২৬ অর্থবছরের ২৭ জাতির জোটের ১৫টি দেশেই তৈরি পোশাক রপ্তানি কমেছে। দেশগুলো বাংলাদেশের পোশাকের বড় বাজার। যেসব দেশে রপ্তানি সামান্য বেড়েছে, তার বেশির ভাগই বাংলাদেশের রপ্তানির ছোট বাজার। জোটগতভাবে ইইউ বাংলাদেশের প্রধান রপ্তানি বাজার। মোট রপ্তানি আয়ের ৫০ শতাংশেরও বেশি আসে এখান থেকে। ইইউ জোটে বাংলাদেশের তৈরি পোশাকের প্রধান বাজার হচ্ছে জার্মানি। একক দেশ হিসেবে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের পর দ্বিতীয় প্রধান বাজার। বিগত দিনে কোনো কোনো বছর যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের চেয়েও বেশি পোশাক রপ্তানি হয়েছে জার্মানিতে। রপ্তানি উন্নয়ন ব্যুরো ও তৈরি পোশাক রপ্তানিকারকদের দুই সংগঠন বিজিএমইএ ও বিকেএমইএর উপাত্ত বিশ্লেষণে দেখা যায়, জার্মানিতে ২০২৪-২৫ অর্থবছর অর্থাৎ আগের অর্থবছরের চেয়ে গত অর্থবছর পোশাক রপ্তানি কম হয়েছে ১১ দশমিক ৫ শতাংশ। অর্থবছরের ৪৯৫ কোটি ডলারের রপ্তানি গত অর্থবছরে ৪৩৮ কোটি ডলারে নেমে এসেছে।

ঘাটতি মেটানোর চেষ্টা : গ্যাস সংকট কাটাতে তাৎক্ষণিক সমাধান নেই সরকারের হাতে দেশে প্রতি বছর স্থানীয় গ্যাসের উৎপাদন কমছে প্রায় ১৫ কোটি ঘনফুট। পুরনো কূপ সংস্কারে মিলছে না প্রত্যাশিত গ্যাস। প্রয়োজনমতো এলএনজি আমদানি করে চাহিদা পূরণের জন্য প্রয়োজনীয় অবকাঠামোও দেশে নেই। অন্যদিকে বিশ্ববাজারে (স্পট মার্কেট) এলএনজির ঊর্ধ্বমুখী দাম, দীর্ঘমেয়াদি চুক্তির আওতায় কাতার থেকে সরবরাহ সংকট—সব মিলিয়ে দেশের গ্যাস খাত এখন নানামুখী সংকটে। দেশীয় ও আন্তর্জাতিক এমন বাস্তবতায় গ্যাস সংকট থেকে দ্রুতই উত্তরণের পথ সরকারের হাতে নেই বলে মনে করছেন জ্বালানি খাতসংশ্লিষ্টরা। পেট্রোবাংলার কর্মকর্তারা বলছেন, স্থানীয় উৎপাদন বাড়ানো না গেলে দেশের গ্যাস সংকট কাটানোর টেকসই কোনো উপায় নেই।
