Bangladesh retains No 2 spot in US apparel exports Mahmud Hasan Khan, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), said the outlook for garment exports to the US was positive as work orders were rebounding following the finalisation of effective tariff rates for individual countries by the US government. However, the industry’s focus should not be on export volume alone, but also on how much value local manufacturers retain, he said. “Obtaining letters of credit from international buyers should not be the main target, as many exporters cannot make even a minimum profit because of high import costs for raw materials such as fabrics and chemicals,” Mahmud said. Many exporters are also shipping goods below production cost in the hope of making profits later, he said. নতুন আমদানি নীতির যে শর্ত বাতিল চায় বিজিএমইএ-বিকেএমইএ নতুন আমদানি নীতিতে নিট ফেব্রিক বা কাপড় আমদানির ক্ষেত্রে আরোপিত বিধান বাতিল বা স্থগিত করার দাবি জানিয়েছে তৈরি পোশাকশিল্পের দুই সংগঠন। বিজিএমইএ ও বিকেএমইএ এই দাবি জানিয়েছে। বাণিজ্য মন্ত্রণালয়ে পাঠানো পৃথক চিঠিতে সংগঠন দুটি বলেছে, আমদানি নীতি আদেশ ২০২৬-২০২৯-এর অনুচ্ছেদ ২৫-এর উপ অনুচ্ছেদ ১২-এ ‘নিট ফেব্রিক আমদানি যোগ্য হবে না’—এমন বিধান রাখা হয়েছে। রপ্তানিমুখী পোশাকশিল্পের স্বাভাবিক কার্যক্রম ও প্রতিযোগিতা সক্ষমতা বিবেচনায় এ বিধান স্থগিত বা প্রত্যাহারের অনুরোধ করেছে তারা। বিজিএমইএ সভাপতি মাহমুদ হাসান খান ১ সেপ্টেম্বর বাণিজ্যমন্ত্রীকে পাঠানো চিঠিতে বলেন, আন্তর্জাতিক ক্রেতাদের চাহিদা প্রতিনিয়ত পরিবর্তিত হচ্ছে। এ কারণে পণ্যে বৈচিত্র্য আনতে হয়। নির্ধারিত মান, ডিজাইন বজায় রাখা ও দ্রুত সরবরাহ নিশ্চিত করার প্রয়োজন হয়। এসব কারণে অনেক ক্ষেত্রে বিদেশ থেকে নির্দিষ্ট ধরনের কাপড় সংগ্রহ করতে হয়। এ ধরনের আমদানির সুযোগ সীমিত হলে রপ্তানিমুখী পোশাকশিল্পের স্বাভাবিক কার্যক্রম ব্যাহত হওয়ার আশঙ্কা আছে। বিজিএমইএ বলেছে, বিদেশি ক্রেতাদের চাহিদা অনুযায়ী নির্দিষ্ট মান, সুনির্দিষ্ট ধরন, রং, ডিজাইন ও ধরনের কাপড় অনেক সময় স্থানীয়ভাবে পাওয়া যায় না। ফলে এসব ক্ষেত্রে বিদেশি উৎস থেকে ফেব্রিক আমদানি করতে হয়। নতুন নীতির সংশ্লিষ্ট বিধান বহাল থাকলে রপ্তানিকারকদের প্রয়োজনীয় কাঁচামাল সংগ্রহে জটিলতা তৈরি হবে। https://www.prothomalo.com/business/industry/7z8tw0yldc

BGMEA, NPA discuss ways to bring RMG workforce under Universal Pension Scheme BGMEA, the trade body representing the country's powerful garments sector, has suggested providing special government incentives for the first two years and setting the pension age limit, when a worker is eligible to cash in on his or her contributions, for RMG workers at 55, instead of 60. BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan made the demand at a discussion on the Universal Pension Scheme was held on Saturday (September 5) at the Nurul Quader Auditorium of BGMEA Complex in Uttara, Dhaka, bringing together members and relevant stakeholders of the Bangladesh Garment BGMEA. BGMEA, BKMEA demand import ban on knit fabric withdrawn BGMEA and BKMEA have separately urged the government to suspend or withdraw a new restriction on knit fabric imports under the country's Import Policy Order 2026–2029. In letters to the Ministry of Commerce, the two trade bodies raised concerns over Sub-clause 12 of Clause 25 of the policy, which states that "knit fabrics shall not be eligible for import". In a letter to the commerce minister on 1 September, BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan said global buyers regularly demand new products, specific quality standards, customised designs and faster delivery. He said Cambodia and Indonesia have performed relatively better because of their smaller export volumes and some order shifting from China. Retail sales have not increased significantly in value terms, while consumer behaviour is also changing, he said.
