Hope for further tariff cuts as cotton, soybean, fuel imports from US rising As Bangladesh steps up imports of cotton, wheat, soybeans and energy from the United States, Dhaka expects further relief from the 20% reciprocal tariff – an opening that could reshape the country's trade balance and competitiveness in its largest export market. Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin today (14 September) said the US has assured that it may reduce the 20% reciprocal duty currently imposed if Bangladesh continues to narrow its trade deficit with it."Washington has expressed satisfaction with the recent decline in the deficit," he told the media following a meeting in Dhaka yesterday with a visiting United States Trade Representative (USTR) delegation. BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan told The Business Standard that, in view of increased cotton imports from the US, a proposal will be made to reduce the tariff on Bangladesh from 20% to 15% or lower. "To secure further duty reductions, we will increase imports of cotton and other products. We will also ensure compliance with US requirements on labour rights and welfare," he said.

মার্কিন পাল্টা শুল্ক: আরও ছাড় চায় ঢাকা, সময় নেবে ওয়াশিংটন বাণিজ্য উপদেষ্টা শেখ বশিরউদ্দীন বলেছেন, বাংলাদেশের সঙ্গে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের বাণিজ্যঘাটতি বর্তমানে ছয় বিলিয়ন ডলারের (৬০০ কোটি ডলার) মতো। এ বাণিজ্যঘাটতি কমলে দেশটি বাংলাদেশি পণ্যে পাল্টা শুল্ক ২০ শতাংশ থেকেও কমাতে পারে। রোববার (১৪ সেপ্টেম্বর) সচিবালয়ে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের সহকারী বাণিজ্য প্রতিনিধি ব্রেন্ডেন লিঞ্চের নেতৃত্বাধীন প্রতিনিধিদলের সঙ্গে অনুষ্ঠিত বৈঠক শেষে বাণিজ্য উপদেষ্টা শেখ বশিরউদ্দীন এ কথা বলেন। বৈঠকে জাতীয় নিরাপত্তা উপদেষ্টা খলিলুর রহমান, বাণিজ্যসচিব মাহবুবুর রহমানসহ ঊর্ধ্বতন কর্মকর্তারা উপস্থিত ছিলেন। যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের বাজারে বাংলাদেশি পণ্যের ওপর আরোপিত পাল্টা শুল্ক ২০ শতাংশ থেকে কমিয়ে অন্তত ১৫ শতাংশে আনার চেষ্টা করছে সরকার। গতকাল রোববার বাণিজ্য মন্ত্রণালয়ের সভাকক্ষে মার্কিন প্রতিনিধিদলের সঙ্গে অনুষ্ঠিত বৈঠকেও এ দাবি তুলে ধরেছে বাংলাদেশ। তবে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের প্রতিনিধিদল বলেছে, পাল্টা শুল্কছাড় এখনই মিলবে না। এ জন্য অপেক্ষা করতে হবে। যুক্তরাষ্ট্র-বাংলাদেশের দ্বিপক্ষীয় বাণিজ্য ঘাটতি দৃশ্যমানভাবে হ্রাস না পাওয়া পর্যন্ত শুল্কছাড় মিলবে না।

US may cut tariffs further if trade deficit reduces: adviser The United States assured that it might cut the imposed 20 per cent tariffs on Bangladeshi products if the country continues to shrink the trade deficit, said commerce adviser on Sunday. In the context of gradual decrease in trade gap, Bangladesh has requested the USTR to further reduce the reciprocal tariff, adviser Sk Bashir Uddin also said.‘They (US side) have assured that if the trade gap continues to shrink, then there is a possibility of further tariff cuts,’ he added. He was speaking to the journalist after a meeting with a delegation of the US Trade Representative, led by Brendan Lynch, assistant US trade representative for South and Central Asia, at the secretariat in the capital. A three-member delegation from the US Trade Representative arrived in Bangladesh on Sunday for a two-day visit, following up on previous parleys in the USA, to discuss the draft trade agreement with Bangladesh.

বাংলাদেশের পোশাকশিল্পের ইইউয়ের বাজার জয় ইউরোপের পরিসংখ্যান সংস্থা ইউরোস্ট্যাটের সর্বশেষ তথ্য বলছে, ২০১৫ সালে যেখানে বাংলাদেশ থেকে ইইউতে ১১.৫৪ বিলিয়ন ইউরো মূল্যের পোশাক রপ্তানি হয়েছিল, ২০২৪ সালে তা দাঁড়িয়েছে ১৮.২৮ বিলিয়ন ইউরোতে। এ সময় ইউরোপের সামগ্রিক পোশাক আমদানি বেড়েছে মাত্র ২০.৪৭ শতাংশ। প্রতিবেদনের তথ্যানুযায়ী ইউরোপে বাংলাদেশের পণ্যের চাহিদা বেড়েছে এবং দেশটি ক্রমে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সরবরাহকারী হয়ে উঠছে। বাংলাদেশ তৈরি পোশাকশিল্প মালিকদের সংগঠন বিজিএমইএর সাবেক পরিচালক মহিউদ্দিন রুবেল বলেন, বাংলাদেশ এখন কম দামি পোশাকের পাশাপাশি অনেক দামি পোশাকও উৎপাদন করে। পরিবেশকে গুরুত্ব দিয়ে বাংলাদেশ পরিবেশবান্ধব কারখানা ও শ্রমিকদের অধিকার নিশ্চিতের ক্ষেত্রে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা রেখেছে। যে কারণে ইউরোপের বাজারে রপ্তানির ধারা অব্যাহত রাখা গেছে।

ঢাকায় বৃহস্পতিবার শুরু হচ্ছে সাউথ এশিয়া ট্রেড ফেয়ার সার্কভুক্ত দেশগুলোর অংশগ্রহণে আগামী বৃহস্পতিবার শুরু হতে যাচ্ছে চার দিনব্যাপী সাউথ এশিয়া ট্রেড ফেয়ার। ওই দিন বেলা ১১টায় রাজধানীর ইন্টারন্যাশনাল কনভেনশন সিটি বসুন্ধরায় এ মেলার উদ্বোধন করবেন বাণিজ্য উপদেষ্টা শেখ বশিরউদ্দীন। রোববার ব্যবসায়ীদের শীর্ষ সংগঠন ফেডারেশন অব বাংলাদেশ চেম্বার্স অব কমার্স অ্যান্ড ইন্ডাস্ট্রির (এফবিসিসিআই) এক সংবাদ বিজ্ঞপ্তিতে এ তথ্য জানানো হয়। এতে বলা হয়, সাউথ এশিয়া ট্রেড ফেয়ারে থাকছে তৈরি পোশাক ও বস্ত্র, জেমস ও জুয়েলারি, কসমেটিকস, চামড়াজাত পণ্য, হোম অ্যাপ্লায়েন্স ও কিচেনওয়্যার, প্রক্রিয়াজাত খাদ্য, ইলেকট্রনিক্সসহ বৈচিত্র্যময় পণ্যের সমাহার।

Women’s participation in labour force falling Bangladesh's labour force shrank by 17 lakh in just one year, with women accounting for most of the decline, according to the final report of the BBS's Labour Force Survey 2024. The report shows that the total labour force stood at 7.17 crore in 2024, down from 7.34 crore the previous year. Male participation remained largely unchanged at 4.8 crore, compared with 4.81 crore in 2023. Female participation, however, fell sharply from 2.53 crore to 2.37 crore over the same period. This marks the first contraction in the country's labour force since 2010. Between 2010 and 2023, the labour force expanded by more than 1.6 crore, driven largely by rising female participation, which grew from 1.72 crore in 2010 to 2.53 crore in 2023.
