BGMEA Calls for Renewable Energy Tariff Reforms at BERC Hearing

BGMEA Vice President Ms. Vidiya Amrit Khan represented BGMEA at the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) public hearing on the proposed Open Access tariff for Renewable-Energy-Based Merchant Power Plants (MPP) on 23 August 2026.

She highlighted that renewable energy is no longer only an environmental priority, it is increasingly essential for Bangladesh’s export competitiveness and market access, particularly to the EU.

She emphasized the need for a commercially viable and predictable framework, particularly 10-year CSS/Receiving Charge relief for eligible renewable MPP off-takers, VAT exemption at the MPP level for electricity supplied to eligible export-oriented industries, a Green Export Electricity Tariff and stable, bankable long-term PPAs and recognition of battery storage and peak-hour renewable supply.

During the public hearing, Government representatives and private-sector stakeholders shared their views on the proposed tariffs.

BERC Chairman Jalal Ahmed and the Commission heard the views and recommendations from the participating stakeholders. These inputs will be considered in the process of finalising the tariff framework.
