Discussion on RMG Sector Challenges & SME Support

On 5 April 2026, a discussion meeting was held at the BGMEA regional office focusing on the current situation, challenges, prospects, and necessary actions for the ready-made garment (RMG) sector. Key issues related to banking, NBR, fire and factory compliance were discussed in detail, with special emphasis on the current condition of the SME sector.

BGMEA Vice President Md. Shehab Udduza Chowdhury stated that SME factories are currently facing a crisis due to banking complexities and LC-related problems. Initiatives have been taken to reopen closed factories, and efforts are underway to make the FOC policy more progressive, including removing FOC limits. He expressed hope that no more small and medium factories would shut down during the tenure of the current Board.

He further mentioned that, following a proposal by BGMEA Director Md. Shaif Ullah Mansur, work is in progress to formulate a separate policy guideline for the SME sector, and he has been assigned responsibility for this task.

In his remarks, BGMEA First Vice President Salim Rahman emphasized the need for prompt and effective policy support from the relevant government ministries, Bangladesh Bank, and the National Board of Revenue to sustain the SME sector. He noted that facilitating access to loans on easy terms, simplifying customs procedures, expanding bonded facilities, and ensuring transparency in export operations would help the sector recover. He also stressed the importance of coordinated efforts from all stakeholders to protect the interests of SME entrepreneurs and sustain the country’s economic growth.

BGMEA Vice President Mohammad Rafique Chowdhury assured SME entrepreneurs that BGMEA is working tirelessly to resolve existing challenges in the sector to prevent factory closures and ensure a business-friendly environment.

In conclusion, the BGMEA First Vice President extended sincere thanks to all participants and expressed optimism that collective efforts would help advance the RMG industry.

The meeting was attended by BGMEA Directors Md. M. Mohiuddin Chowdhury, Md. Shaif Ullah, and Enamul Aziz Chowdhury, along with former directors, Advisor of the SME Standing Committee Khandakar Belayet Hossain, Chairman Mohammad Abdul Shukkur, Co-Chairmen, members, and a large number of SME factory owners.
