Female RMG workers to get dormitory

Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) and Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) will set up a dormitory in an effort to start facilitating its thousands of workers in the port city with standard housing.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed in this regard between BGMEA and CDA at Chittagong Club auditorium at around 12:00 noon today (Sunday).
State Minister for Housing and Public Works Abdul Mannan Khan, MP, is likely to attend the MoU signing ceremony as the chief guest.

The dormitory for the female garment workers will be developed on a 37-katha land of CDA at the cost of around Tk 400 million in the city’s Saltgola area.
It would provide accommodation to a total of 2,928 female workers, sources said.

CDA would start construction of the dormitory to be housed in five six-storey buildings in September and hand it over to BGMEA two years after signing of the MoU.
There will be 46 rooms from the first to fifth floors and 14 rooms on the ground floor of the dormitory. Each room from first to fifth floors will accommodate eight workers while those on the ground floor will accommodate 12 boarders each.

The ground floor of the dormitory would also house medical centre, prayer room, training centre, shopping corner, cafeteria and common room.
BGMEA First Vice President Nasir Uddin Chowdhury said the setting up of the dormitory would be a milestone for the country’s apparel sector.

The workers will be able to stay in the dormitory at a cheaper cost, he said adding that BGMEA would also take other projects like it for the welfare of the workers after successful implementation of the dormitory project.
